OK, I think we have finally decided on a lift for my son's XJ project. Looking at the Zone 3" lift with full leafs, coils, shocks, and u-bolt hardware........with optional swaybar disconnects, steering stabilizer, and TC drop kit......for $685 bucks.

My son is 16 and this is his daily driver and he isn't looking for crazy off-road.....mainly for looks. We will put 31" tires on it, too.

I have a couple of questions, however.

1. Is Zone a good quality kit?.....and is this a good price?
2. Do we need longer front and rear brake-lines?

Although LCOG set ups perform well, they aren't really for us daily driver weekend warrior types. Dragging your belly over obstacles tends to create problems for us fellas that have to drive our rig to work Monday. Not trying to argue or be a douche, but it all comes back to the most important part of any build. Be honest with yourself about what your really gonna use your junk for and select the best set up for your particular situation.

Zone is connected to BDS, yes they are a decent company with good parts.
Yes you will need at least a longer rear line. You could just relocate the fronts, but longer lines there would be better. Some say that you don't need to worry about a TC drop with a 3" lift, but it comes down to each vehicle. I had horrible drive line problems with my 3" lift. A TC drop is a bad bandage fix. A slip yoke eliminator kit and a double cardan drive shaft is the better way to go. That way you are not leaning the motor and trans back putting the front drive shaft at a bad angle and putting more stress on your motor mounts

Your not. I was tired so I gave a generic answer to start pointing in a direction. IMHO with lift selection people need to ask, how much do o want to spend and what am I driving over/through.

Here's 10" wide tires on American Racing Baja 15x8 wheels w/ 3.75" backspacing. You'd probably be fine in the rear, but I think the fronts are going to give you a problem. (The white XJ in the pic - not the silver one)
My search lead me here.

I bought a 91 XJ that has a 3" procomp lift, stock 15" wheels, stock fender flares and 31" Bigfoot tires which is rubbing on the LCA. If I buy aftermarket wheels with 3.75" backspacing, will it rub on stock flares? As it sits right now, there isn't much clearance to the flares.

If I have to do any trimming then the tires are going to stick out (with aftermarket wheels) way beyond the body. I really don't care but cops around here will.

Shouldn't rub unless you're wheeling. Bump stop properly and you should be good. Keep in mind that a 3.75" backspace wheel will make your tires stick out a 1.5"-2" past the factory flare.

good point here- make sure you are familiar with local laws regarding this. on a 9.5" wide tire and 3.75 BS this is how far the tires stick out. it is quite a bit..

9.5" wide tire on 3.75 BS

I have to disagree.

There's been a huge push for LCoG as the recent trend, since the "YOU NEED LONG ARMS" trend died down. LCoG is a great build, and I'm a fan, but most people think it's as simple as stuffing large tires under the smallest possible lift.

There's way more to it, and any proper LCoG build has skids under anything vulnerable.

There it is.. I'd rather put money into armor and tires than a big lift

I should have been more specific. The OP was asking for a budget friendly DD/mild weekend rig. No doubt LCoG setups are awesome, but figure in a fully armored, geared, highly trimmed rig running 35's or larger tires. That soon gets to be way less than budget friendly or practical. That's just my two pennies though. I run a 4.5" long arm lift on 32" s and it works perfectly for me. Comfortable yet capable. In the the end this dude is going to have to research and see what really floats his goat.

We're disagreeing to make the same point lol. What I meant was LCoG is usually misinterpreted. It isn't cheap, and it takes trial and error to perfect. It isn't anywhere remotely as simple as it looks.

Hey chip how those 32s do on stock gears? (If you have stock gears). I'm planning ahead to get 32s for my zone 4.5 lift but I don't want to suffer too bad on the fuel cost.

I'm actually running 255 75 17 which measures out to 32" x 10". Honestly it's not half bad, as far as take out and bottom end it dose great. The only time I have problems is on long gradual up hill road situations. It just keeps getting slower and slower until I give it enough skinny pedal to make it downshift or manually drop it back into 3rd gear. I only lost about 1.5 MPG which I don't think is too awfull. I'm currently collecting parts to build new axles with 4:11 gears and a front lunch box locker.
