Default 35s for DD

I have 33'' MTs now and they're OK on the roads and great on the trails. Seeing as how I spend more time on the roads, I'd like to buy a set of street tires, but I'd like them to be 35s so they'd compliment my lift now. I don't mind using my 33s for trails, since I like the room for flex.

My question is, what do I need to do to accomplish this? I'm assuming I'll need to regear, then I guess if I do, I could wheel with them if I wanted to. I do quite a bit of highway driving as well, so speedometer gear too. I have a D30/8.25 combo with an Aussie and 4340 chromoly in the front.

Cheers

Just about to mention a tie rod end upgrade, but then I saw your list of mods lol...

got extended brakelines?
also I hear the fuel injector upgrade is nice after you put big ole tires on a jeep.

Shoot, forget to mention I have a Rusty's HD tie rod and IRO double shear track bar. I'm going to be putting extended lines on soon, since I just went to long arms and have been using stock lines just relocated. I have to check if the previous owner did that already, since driving my lifted XJ right now with 33s and stock gears, I have quite a bit of power when driving. Like enough to throw you back a little. A buddy of mine was a little surprised at how it accelerated. I also plan on doing the Durango gear box swap in the next month or so, before the tires.

if your suspension is already good as it is, get 35s and regear.

Would it be worth it to get upgraded shafts for my 8.25? And how much roughly are we talking in parts alone for new gears?

I would say depends how much youre gonna beat on it offroad.
If you go ***** out everytime you wheel it, I dont think 35s would be a great idea.
People tend to break things when they get to 35s on a 30/8.25 setup.

Stronger shafts would be a good idea but again, if you like to push the limits of your axles I would think staying 33s would be a better idea.

Are you on 3:55s right now?

I won't be wheeling it. If I regear and maybe reinforce it a bit more, then I probably would a little. I'd be keeping my 33 MTs for when I want to wheel, since I like the extra room for flexing. The 35s would be street tires.

I dont really see any benefit from using a larger street tire lol
Especially if it forces you to regear, which is alot of money just to have a 2" larger tire!

On the street I am using 31" Ltx m/s look small and ugly but they rock in the snow/rain/dry

you will defnitly want to regear for 35s.... i put 4.56s in when i had my 33s and i felt was a little on the low side for the streets, off road it was awesome. i just put 35s on, still has plenty of power on the streets and is decent offroad still. im running the d30 with 4340 shafts with a locker and a 29 spline 8.25 open with stock shafts. from what i was told the 1040h shafts are not but 10 percent stronger than a factory shaft.... so it wasnt worth it to me to spend the 250 bucks on them.

i got the bfg km2s and they are great on the road so far.

Well with my lift 33s look like 31s lol. My MTs don't get very much traction on wet pavement and stuff, so I need street tires. I figured why not with a little work, go to 35s, since it'd look a lot nicer.

How much were the gears?

Also, the previous owner had made this into a wheeling rig. He had it at about 4'' with an Aussie in the front. I'm driving with 33s now, with I'm assuming, stock gears, and my acceleration isn't bad at all. And like I mentioned earlier, I have enough acceleration to throw me back a little in my seat. Is that normal for 33s on stock? I just want to be sure I'm on stock gears before I dump the money into better ones.

I see that alot haha

Rustys has a deal for $445 for both gear sets
Dont forget if youre on 3:55s and going up you need new carriers for front and rear for the larger ring gears.
Im waiting to regear because it is a perfect excuse to go full locker in both haha

I just updated my previous post regarding my acceleration with my 33s and my stock gears btw.

Also, thanks for the link! So how much more would I have to spend in addition to that Rusty's kit?

Yea its a good deal especially with all the new seals and such.
That depends which direction you decide to go.
You can find the larger carriers used, or new I think they run around $80 for the D30. I am not sure about the 8.25 options.

I am not 100% sure, but if you do have 3:55s right now I do not think your aussie will work with a larger carrier. Which is why I am eventually going to opt for a full locker.
(aussie+$80 carrier is just a little short of a full locker)

But if it feels like that much power it is possible it was already regeared. Only way to really find out is to crack em open and count, which is a pain in the *** lol

8.25 doesn't have a carrier break.

I know a guy that has a 8.25,33's,ARB lockers,stock shafts & beats on his XJ & has not broken a shaft,yet.

it could have been regeared, an easy way to check is to jack up the back end and mark lines on the shaft and count how many times the shaft spins for a rotation of the tire
