So I go to start my 1998 Jeep Cherokee and I get the quiet humm noise, and only a single click with no turn over. My battery is 2 months old, new starter, and I made sure that I had a solid charge on the battery as well. Any one have ideas on a fix for this?

Your new starter is probably bad, Just because it's new does not mean that it is not bad. I've had New and Reman starters Fail within a few months of installing them.

Make sure your connections are tight at the battery. My 91 started doing this after I replaced a battery, I didn't have the terminals tight enough. Pulled them both off, cleaned, put back on and never had another issue. You could have your full voltage but if your not making good contact it can't pull full current and she wont start.

Mine does the same thing and I have to push forward on the shifter towards Park and then turn the key. I have heard that it is pretty common with Xjs. Maybe try that.

I would pull and clean terminals before I did anything else, then check the ground and starter connections, those all the cheapest to check and should always be where you start with all no start problems.

That would be the NSS, but I'm not sure he would even get a click if it was the Neutral Safety Switch, but I'm not 100% positive. I still think its a lack of current, but looks like we are waiting for see what he has found.

Had a brief moment today and tried the neutral switch trick and it didn't work. Here in a couple of days I will have some time one again and I'll try making sure the terminals are good... Leaving the bad starter to last (I'm wearing a cast on my hand so I'll have to get a friend to help me so it again (

try jumping the starter terminals with a screwdriver. with the key in on position. if it spins the engine then spins freely after a while its ok. if it only spins freely then its bad. remember to try again with the key to "reset" the starter into the flywheel.
this is how i started mine during this problematic time.
