Yeah, for the most part. I'm no mechanic, but I generally feel like a competent human being so I will do what I know and learn (or try to) the rest. Any initial suggestions other than changing out the fluids before I start bleeding my wallet dry?

Good job holding out for the RIGHT one... Persistence pays off!

When I got mine it was fluids, plugs, wires, transmission mount, brakes.. Then on to the oil leaks.

Good luck and welcome!

Change out all the fluids, like you said, do a tune-up and a general inspection of things like rubber mounts, hoses, belt, bushings, ball joints, etc...you'll get to know your Jeep, and have the reassurance that all is well. Get it happy first, before you try to take on any mods. What are your long term plans for this nice looking ride?

Thanks. It's turning into my DD. Pending work, in the spring I plan on taking an extended sabbatical and driving and camping across the country over the course of a few months. That being said, I obviously want it in the best mechanical condition possible, and easily capable to explore on my journey. Looking to lift it 3" max (Zone looks to be the best affordable option right now) and taking out the back seats to create some sort of cargo/sleeping platform in it.

By the way, does anyone know where to download the FSM for a '99 for free? I've heard mixed reviews of the Haynes and Chiltons and the ones online I've found were for other years.

Chang, here is a buyer's checklist I put together.
It may give some ideas of things to check and/or replace,
if you're wanting to sort this out as best as possible.
Just a list of ideas.
