it wont go 200,000+ miles though. I wheeled my tacoma pretty hard and it still had the factory alternator and waterpump after 288,000 miles. Our government is killing the economy and the american auto industry. Dont argue, you wont win-Yor poor mileage american 440 is supporting the middle east which is more f!@#ed up than japan anyways. With that being said i like my xj- Jeeps are the only chrysler products that are worth buying imo. I like my xj better than a toyota because they are cheap to buy, have nearly as good reliabilty and the junk yards are chock full of xj's making replacement parts alot easier to find. there are alot of upgrades/mods that can be done to an xj cheaply also. Dont ask me why I like a toyota better than a jeep because I can come up with nearly as many pro's for a toyota as well

lol. spending well over 150 man hours building one and having owned a 86 runner in the past i have nothing but respect for them. its sad that on this forum seems like every few days some one is bashing wranglers or this rig or that rig. I don't see that on Marlin Crawler or Pirate its really just sad. Like I said in another one of these threads we have enough enemies trying to kill our sport.

Whats up with all these threads about Cherokees vs. _____? Every rig has its pros and cons. It's really all about how you wheel it. I respect whatever rig because its about having fun! The 22re is just as bulletproof as the 4.0. CHerokees look better though Seasoned Member

buy new American - take jobs to mexico and canada, but make US CEO's rich. contribute to the economy, or send American cash to Swiss banks???
quality control quite poor, most plastic components break right at warranty expiration...
buy new import - assembled in USA, keep the American working man able to pay his mortgage, take the profits to foreign CEOs.
US has superior quality control, but things like sticky gas pedals still go unnoticed every now and then.
buy used American gas guzzler - increase dependency on middle eastern oil.
buy a used import - the chassis and sheet metal is usually their weak point, but a lot of em go forever like the energizer bunny.
buy an XJ - will whoop energizer bunny's tiny pink tushy any day.
so, now let's talk about the real subject.
some people think that a stock XJ lacks in power. most stock XJs are not really super capable. my stock XJ couldn't even pull it's own tail out of the snow. that was on bald tires.... now, that has changed.
a stock non-ifs toyota is about as capable as a stock XJ. both have great potential.
that's the part that is supposed to be discussed.... potential and reliability.
they're both great...
i personally don't like toyotas but have a lot of respect for the older ones.
now that 22re might be gutless, but it gets the job done on the trail. and it's still a lil 4 banger.
it's not a 4.0.
XJ on the other hand has better jy support, cheaper to lift.
i think it's more stout, will require less sheet metal work mainly because you can buy a fairly new one with no rust.
an 84 toy on 35s and proper gears gets about 14 mpg at best and has no power left to troll on highway.
a fairly new XJ on 35s can get about 16-17 with the right gears and still have power to play around with.
non-ifs toyotas are hard to find and usually cost about the same as a newer XJ. not because they hold their value, but because people just want an arm and a leg for em.
weight the pros and cons.
in my eyes the XJ wins.
you make your own judgment, but do so logically.
