Default what year grand cherokee??

After parting out the 88 xj I had because of a bent frame. I'm considering a Grand Cherokee. Any suggestions on the best year, options I want the 4.0 liter, and a little more wife friendly interior

For me it would simply be 1993-2004. If you want the 4.0, the neat thing about 1993 is that you'd get an AW4 with your 4.0 unlike every other year which would have a Chrysler transmission. 93 and 94 also had 5-speeds.

I love my 04 WJ Overland the last year of the good ones and every creature comfort your wife could ever want, in fact I have a hard time keeping the wife out of mine in bad weather for a single reason full time 4wd. Ft LPD30 lsd/rear D44 lsd 3.73 gears. It has more options than her Town Car, no joke.

The 99-02 grands got the 0331 head aka the cracking head.Honestly i would take the v8 ones they are 1mpg less then the 4.0 and the grands are heavier you'll like the power. The 5.2 in the zj is pretty good,The 4.7 in the wj if abused has head problems and timing problems.

The 4.0, in my opinion, is fine in a ZJ (but the 5.2/9 is also a super reliable engine). While my love of the 4.0 would still have me considering them in WJ's, the WJ is just fat enough to feel sluggish with a 4.0--some people might hate that.

My biggest problem with the Grands has always been those Chrysler transmissions.

The 98 limited 5.9 was the fastest suv in its day and was motor trends suv of the year.

I have only seen one ZJ with a five speed in my life. They are very rare, usually only on the bare bones trim levels in 93.

I've seen a few. Both 93 and 94. They are indeed quite uncommon--not something to hold your breath for.

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee V6 4.0L 2WD/4WD with a P0783 A/T 3-4 shift solenoid check engine code. Is the shift sensor typically the only part that needs to be replaced? Or is it also the speed sensor?...

Welcome to CF!

First of all, there ain't no V in that 6! No, really. It's an inline 6 cylinder. I only stress this because it makes you look like a real newb.

Your P0783 code shows that 4th gear (O/D) isn't engaging. (no rpm drop on 3-4 shift). In order to figure out why, I'd have to go to my trans manual and research it, but I was just checking the forum before retiring and saw your post. Is the O/D light on the dash lit? If so, there is a button on the side of the shifter that is for locking the O/D out. If not, there is an internal problem with the trans or maybe the thermistor in the trans pan. The thermistor is a variable resister that measures fluid temperature and won't allow 4th gear upshift if the temp is below 32*F or will make it downshift if the fluid is above 260*F.

Here I am, checking my manual! Shows you what kind of a guy I am.

You can check the resistance of the thermistor on pins in the transmission wiring plug. Inside the socket on the transmission, there are 8 pins. Pin 8 is the center pin, pin 1 is it 9 o'clock and the numbers go up counterclockwise. The resistance between pin 3 and pin 8 should be 1000 ohms at 70*F. IDK what the resistance should be at other temps because the book doesn't say. I think the resistance gets higher at lower temperatures, but don't quote me on that. The IAT sensor does. That's about 1000 ohms at 77*F and 30,000 at 32*F.

Now, time for some shuteye.

Why would you post this in this thread?

Also... "I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee V6 4.0L" ...no you don't.
