I got mine in April 2012. 190,000 miles on it. No visible rust, but there was plenty underneath (I had to replace most of the passenger side floor). New exhaust, new(ish) steering linkages, fluids had allegedly been changed regularly. Some minor dents in the rear quarter panel, but... well, if your Jeep doesn't have any dents, then you're doing something wrong. Talked the guy down from $1800 to $1500.
I've since driven it 10,000 miles in it, while doing only minor stuff to it. I replaced the water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, clutch fan and brakes, and changed all the fluids... not because they needed it, but because I like to do that when I get a car who's history I don't know. Been a solid performer ever since.

2001 2 door XJ with 250k miles but solid rockers!!!! Paid $1,100 for it and it came with an extra set of wheels, brake shoes and wheel cylinders, 4 new shocks and ball joints in a box it the back! Plust I found $1.47 under the seat!
I payed 3500 at a local used dealer for my 99 2 door that had 75k on it when I bought it a year and half ago all stock, no rust, with small all terrains with good tread..pretty good deal of you ask me
98 2 door with 120k on it for 2,000.
tires and brakes had less than 1000 miles on them, and I personally sold the guy $400 in tune up parts (wires, plugs, cap, rotor, etc) and a muffler the day before I bought it. He put everything on that night.
Oh and he had a brand new set of thick goodyear floor mats he gave me too.

I paid $1700 almost 5 years ago. Broke down on the way home the day I bought it. Since then.... well pretty much completely rebuilt the whole XJ.
94 H.O. motor, New axles (they were free), Installed new AW4 tranny, 4.56 gears, Detroit lockers, Front CV axle shafts, Custom made drive shafts, swapped 242 to 231 T-case, 6.5" Rough Country lift, 2" added coil lift, custom made rear leaves for another 2" in the rear, Steel braided brake lines, and still more coming.
