I guess it depends on your rebuild philosophy. Personally I feel like if I have to take the time to get the head off then I'm going to not simply replace it, I'm going to upgrade it. In my case the head wasn't blown but I needed to replace the lifters and rods. I figured there was no way I was going to put that old head back on there. I could have just cleaned it up but I didn't want to mess with the springs so I found a stroker head with them already installed. In fact, I still have this 0630 head and I will most likely be selling it.

Still, if you have the time to wait for the machining process and you have a good casting (ie the 0630 or the 0720) your head may very well be worth saving. What are the specs of your rig? If we know that then we may be able to give you more comprehensive advice.

Just finished off my 2.5 day death match with my rear suspension. New springs, new bushings, new shackles, new shocks, new bump stops, and all new hardware. Holy hell does rust suck. My shackles were both broken in half. Those forward bolts were a serious PITA. The passenger side forward bolt hole was stripped, so I had to run a tap through it. But it’s done, and it’s amazing how much higher she sits on new springs that are suspended on intact shackles.

Got a bunch more parts in for the new engine (If it ever shows up here?), drilled and taped my new T stat housing for the Setrab thermal switch for the E fans. Bought a Derale 180 ON switch and that thing did not come on till 199
This one was on at exactly 180, OFF at 160.

This is how I tested it.

Could be a blessing in disguise since many if not all of the 2000's have the 0331 head which is not their best (I read it is prone to cracking though ours has 337k miles on it with no leaks as of yet).
We actually have a second 0331 2000 engine with 270k and no issues but I would still suggest sourcing a non-0331 and have it redone or buy one already refurbed.

Finally tracked down the tea kettle whistle that was driving me crazy. Combination of dry rotted vacuum line elbows on the intake manifold and a cracked check valve on the brake booster.

If it's an original 0331 head, it should be replaced. However, if you have an 0331 TUPY head, that should be a decent head casting. One issue with using a 0630 or older head on a 2000 or 2001 is figuring out an alternative for mounting the coil packs.

Was browsing facebook marketplace and found a fairly clean and unmolested looking Comanche with the 4.0 and 5 speed. Is a little higher than I would like to pay and the first thing it needs is a heater core, but, it would be nice to get back into a Jeep.

Indeed true. However, both of ours are non TUPY 0331's

Default "New" 2002 GC

Bought a 2002 GC Laredo 4.0L, 105K, and trying to shake out the gremlins. The two obvious issues to start with were an old battery and worn front seat bottoms. The battery's in and the new seat covers are awaiting a free weekend to pull the seats out for their installation.

I did get some small stuff done already: New front and back wiper arms, floor mats, hood and rear door/window struts, wheel lugs and a couple of center caps, front grille, and a windshield chip repair.

Although I didn't get complete maintenance records, the previous owner appears to have been good about changing fluids. I should have about 3K to go before pulling the oil plug. However, I have a lit air bag light and what might be a electrical leak somewhere to deal with in the interim.

All in all, this should be a fun job.

Default Another day with a 20 year old Jeep

Dealing with the dreaded stumbling just off idle. Fist I searched for frayed wires or dangling or damaged vacuum lines. Next, I tested my sensors: O2, MAP, TPS & idle solenoid:

Finding the electrical sensors all good, I pulled my injectors, cleaned and tested them :

Testing the resistance in the injectors

listed her for sale. my wife and i have four vehicles and its just to expensive to insure all of them when we only drive two of them so little. i would hate to have the Cherokee start getting rust because it sat in my driveway near the ocean for so long so i would rather, though sadly, sell her.
