Hi welcome to the site. That era Grand Cherokee is actually a ZJ. A rear axle shouldn't be to hard to find. It doesn't have to be out of a 2wd, it can also be from a 4wd.
Thank you and you are right, spent 6 hours yesterday helping pull one off of a 4×4 sport that matches mine from a salvage yard.
Made the time today to swap out the steering in my 99 XJ, went with the ZJ upgrade which is a lot more beefier then the stock XJ steering. Really only found 1 bad and 2 mediocre ball joints after I replaced it all. Then my second hub bearing assembly arrived on the BBT, so I commenced to changing those as well.
Found my noise maker on the driver's side. When turned by hand you could feel the roughness as well. As I changed both, I will keep the passenger side as a emergency spare hub. As usual one side was hard as hell to get apart while the other just gave up easily!
Got the steering close if not on the money for the front end alignment but I still have the steering wheel off center. I will leave that to the front end technician to straighten up! Hope to have the alignment checked before the week is up.
Noticed your post bought my jeep a month ago and it needs a new headliner, is it hard to do it yourself. Do you have recommendations for references for materials.
I bought the fabric from Joann's for around $20 with a coupon and used super 77 spray adhesive. Not really difficult, definitely have two people. Also, do it outside in the backyard if you can otherwise put down a lot of plastic drop cloths and cover anything you don't want to get sticky.

The last two weeks replaced coil springs, leaf springs, ball joints, sway bar end links, track bar, shackles.
Waiting on parts for drag link, rough country tie rod, all tie rods.
I finally installed a backup camera in the space where the tag lamp goes.
Also switched to this slick keyfob. $14 including the trip to the locksmith.
Previously installed junkyard Bose tweeters in the sail panels—also from the junkyard [just in case]. Tweeters are pre-wired, so the hole cutting was the hardest part.
Also updated the factory speakers with Bose speakers from the same Cadillac—none of them fit perfectly.
