instead of what did I do today, it's more like what have I done for the last month. Regeared to 4.56, replaced all ujoints bushings, bearings etc. Installed ballistic fab diff cover for the d30, Installed IRO trackbar, replaced rear main seal, rebuilt front drive shaft, currently working on rear disc brake conversion. Still on the list mount newish cooper discoverer stt pros, shackle relocation bracket and re boomerang shackles, smittybuilt winch, inverter, 4 port injectors, new radiator, timing chain. All these parts are sitting in my garage oh and wire up all the lights and winch. Lol things to order still... 97+ center console with cup holders, cb radio, bored tb, extended brake lines, hood vents. I'm sure there's more just can't think about it right now lol I should start a build on here but I document most of my work on Instagram: arizona_xj. That was a lengthy post lol sorry

 

Mine takes 6qts, as it has the bigger filter on it.

 

They use 4 quart (1 gallon) jugs because in many large truck engines, oil is measured by the gallon and not by the quart. I honestly wish regular car oil jugs came in 4 quart instead of 5, as I've had two small 4 banger motors, and neither one took 5 quarts. My ZX2 took 4 and a half, leaving half a quart in the bottom of the jug. My Cruze takes 4.25 quarts, leaving 3/4 of a quart in the jug. Honestly easier to use quart bottles in those cases.

The 4.0, even with the stock filter, takes 6 quarts during an oil/filter change.

 

yeah... it's not the end of the world...but would be nice to have the different sized containers so you don't have a little extra clutter around the garage.

 

Well I saw a coolant leak for the first time (only had this ZJ for a week). I was bummed, but after further investigation I may be OK. Today was the first time I used the heater and once I got to work I noticed a few drops of coolant on the ground. Opened the hood and it seemed to come from the water neck, specifically the heater hose connected to the neck. I tightened all the hose clamps on the hoses and drove it home 20 miles and no more leaks. I will do further follow up tomorrow to make sure everything is fine.

 

I would rather have too much instead of 1 qt shy. One 5 qt jug is way cheaper than 5 individual qts too. Honestly, I would rather buy 2 gallons of rotella instead of 1 gallon and 2 qts. Cheaper and I have the 2 qts for the next oil change.

 

Not that it works with a Jeep but figure a car that takes 4 quarts with a 5 quart jug you get some to top off if necessary here and there.

 

Heater hoses for a 97+ 4.0 is your answer. I also got an upper hose for a 97+ because it lays over top of the AC compressor instead of snaking around behind it. Saves a little room in the engine bay. Albeit not much, but makes it easier to get down into the area behind the compressor.

Meh... yeah. Would hate to see it go is all.

Good news being.... piston and rings still intact?

 

Or just to be on the safe side, go down to your local parts store and have them cut you off a new length of hose. Only costs a few bucks. You could always get the kit and using a water hose, flush and back-flush just those lines in case there's any buildup/blockage in them. I've seen some pretty nasty crap come out of those before.

 

^^^ and besides... if you look at salad's Rotella thread.... the title says it all.. there are so many more uses for the stuff. lol....

Problem I run into with leftover oil in the 5 quart jugs, aside from a jug sitting around with less than a quart in it (minor I know) is that I use the bottles/jugs to take the waste oil I just drained to the collection area. Was convienient for my XJ, where the engine took the full 5 quarts, and a 4 quart Rotella jug just wasn't quite big enough, but not as convienient for my smaller engines that don't take the full 5 quarts.

I don't use the Rotella in my cars anymore (apparently the 40 weight causes problems with variable cam phasers) but have found it to be ideal for ATVs. Of course, I'm still keeping my eye out for the right MJ.

 

Yeah but if you're like me, you probalby have more than a few jugs sitting around. Scenario.... you have 2 quarts left sitting in a rotella jug until your next oil change in the XJ. You buy 1 Rotella Jug - hey now you have 2 empties. OR- you can buy your 2 jugs of rotella, you'll have 2 quarts leftover from the one, 2 quarts leftover from the previous, combine those two and now you'll have a gallon.

Simple math

 

Yeah... I would use them for the used oil too... and yeah having a little left over can be annoying at times..but it all works out after a few changes to where I've got a spare empty gallon one to return the old stuff in for recycling.
I wouldn't mind having a nice MJ to add to the collection either...but that's down the road for me.
And the Rotella, just like other blends...are made for a certain engine type application. I certainly wouldn't run it in a little Japanese 4 banger. lol. But the type of plant the I6 is... does nice things for it.

I would hate to see it go too but I can always build another.

Good news is I can reuse the pistons but rings, bearing and lifters will be getting replaced. If it wasnt for the stupid cracked head, I would be in the rebuild under $150. And that would be for name brand parts, not cheap china junk. Also helps having leftover spare Jeep parts.
