Finally did the injector swap today to 784's, already notice the difference, lower rpm on the idle and she smoothed out running wise in general. Next Is wiring up the new pigtail connectors an alignment Thursday at a shop

Every two years I head to the smog shop with my heart in my throat. Will this be the year? The year of gross polluter? The year my tailpipe goes rogue? The year of failure? Every two years I make the long drive in a rig I've fallen in love with, these questions making laps in my head, wondering if I'll be forced to send him off to the scrap yard in favor of something less feral but every two years I'm rewarded with a smiling tech and a big green check in the PASS box. This year was no different. In fact, it did better this time than last, especially on the 25 mph stuff where most results were at least 75% below allowable. The idle stuff was a bit closer to the limit and might need some addressing between now and October 2017 but, for now, I've just bought myself another two years of worry free adventure. Ef yeah.

I will be 54 in two days and I can still do this on big rigs with a BIG hammer. This kind of work is going to help make us live longer my friend.

And you and I know about working on big rigs.

Cummins 400. 36 head bolts. 4 separate pulls on each head bolt to 305 ft/lbs while teetering on front suspension components and frame rails.

That makes three of us. Ford F-550, F-700 and F-800. Along with International 4300 and 4600's. Did fleet maintenance as my night job for years. After working on those, Jeeps are a walk in the park.

Yep! I know you know it takes real physical effort and acrobatics to put one together! Then adding to this I am a little guy, but I can still wrangle a set of heads back onto a Cummins block That was one thing I like about the older cummins, The heads can indeed be removed and replaced by hand without a hoist but they are still heavy as hell.

I've still got my homemade T handles for wrangling them and the guide studs I made from old head bolts. Want them?

Really have to have done it to understand the difference Just changing out a starter by yourself and having to hold it up with one hand while you get a bolt started with the other can be a just reason to celebrate! lol.

Part of working smarter means knowing not to argue with people who think it equates with hitting the parts harder.

If you THINK so,. That's why we're real mechanics and techs, we don't go for "Oh, shiny!" We go in to get a job done with tried and true methods. Can't argue with Cruiser on repair methods either, he was wrenching on these while y'all were crapping green in your diapers. I swear you kids have gotten spoiled.
