Default towing question

I currently do not own a jeep of any kind. I am looking . I need one to be a toad behind my motorhome. Therein lies lots of questions. which is. Can I tow a 2wd automatic 1996 Cherokee behind my motorhome dinghy style.? I have looked places that are supposed to have the answer but find conflicting answers . I don't care if its automatic or not I prefer 2wd. But I can get a 4x4.. Just want a Cherokee. Don't know which way to go. Prefer pre 2000 like that body style better. Sorry if this is wrong place to post questions. to put this post but I cant figure out how to get to get there. So, if Im wrong I apologize . But I still need the help. Thannks

Not sure about the 2wd but on a 4x4 if it has a neutral spot in the transfer case then yes you can tow it behind your motorhome the transfer case has a oil pump that is driven off output shaft for rear drive shaft so will keep oil moving in transfer while you are moving. there are some comp's that make a pump system that is plumbed into trans lines and allows for towing as well may check into them to see if they will work on a XJ here is just one to check out

You can flat-tow a 4WD either automatic or manual with the transfer-case in N since as RockinRonnie mentioned the T-case oil-pump is driven off the output shaft and putting it in N will disconnect the transmission, you can also flat-tow a 2WD manual since the manual is splash-lubricated. A 2WD automatic however should not be flat towed unless you pull the driveshaft (not that hard just 4 bolts) or possibly have some kind of auxiliary oiling system like RockinRonnie mentioned as the fluid pump for the automatic is in the torque-converter and fluid will not flow if trans is in N and the engine isn't running so if you flat tow it with the drive shaft installed and transmission in N it will be running dry and wear out quickly.

Only way to tow an automatic 4x2 without disconnecting the driveshaft would be to use one of these or something similar:

Remco Lube Pump

At that price it'd be more cost effect to get a 4x4 with a transfer case you can put in neutral.
