This was in part why I wanted to start the thread. I wanted to hear some of the stories and evaluations of others. I was more assuming that XJs were diminishing in Daily Driving & Commuting duty, but not much.
Thanks to all for the contributions (keep them coming). I certainly appreciate the folks that speak to the widely accepted daily driving type of scenarios. I certainly agree if you need big capabilities, there is no choice. But I'm sort of thinking about the evaluations folks might go through (like me) when having to purchase or replace an XJ. I personally when with a Subaru Forester because it makes better sense overall. What I save I can put toward an future XJ weekender. As mentioned, there was also a HUGE difference in insurance values. It had to do with the safety equipment and IIHS ratings. Forester is one of the cheapest in fact.
I will return to the XJ world, my recent return to the site has confirmed I still love them. Having working one, learned some things I want to do different (won't be getting anything with an 0331 head unless it has been replaced with new one). Good chance it'll be read again ;-)
I loved mine when it was my DD before I rolled it on its lid but even now I still drive alot. Just this week I parked my WJ in the garage and started DD the XJ again.

I DD mine everyday. 75 miles round trip. Plus, a 400 mile trip every two weeks. I love driving it and it never let's me down. Buying new SUV is not going to get much better mpg, so why have a payment? If you do your maintenance, they are very reliable. It's all a personal choice.

or who cares what model, as long as its a tdi you're good to go.... !?!?...
Yeah I just want a turbo diesel sedan for highway miles, ha ha. It could be something other than VW, but there aren't many state-side options around. Driving from Denver to Tucson on 1 tank of fuel sounds mighty nice

5 speed TDI Golf is what I'd probably pick up. ~40mpg would begreat, and you can still fit a good amount of loot in the back, and find parking spots where mere mortals and their full size trucks can't fit!
I used to daily my xj until I got my 2009 a4. thing is amazing on gas. only cost me like 40 bucks a week to drive it. when I daily drove the xj I was spending about 80 a week on gas. but now that winter is here im back to daily driving my xj while my audi hibernates for the winter.. don't want to get her covered in road salt and all that ****

Had no choice today. 6in of snow overnight and still snowing. My car cannot make it to the end of the block and since I live in unincorporated area our streets dont get plowed until everything else is done hehe. So I fixed my heat to drive the Jeep. 20 min of work.

"VW TDI" is pretty specific for North America, going to be a Jetta, Passat, or Golf. Nobody's selling a Rabbit for $4000 lol
