Mine was a pseudo Daily Driver though I did not commute. However, it was the vehicle of use for everything from grocery runs to chasing storms. Ideally I wanted to keep it for extreme chasing only, but when Florida came into view, it wasn't feasible to keep it.

This was in part why I wanted to start the thread. I wanted to hear some of the stories and evaluations of others. I was more assuming that XJs were diminishing in Daily Driving & Commuting duty, but not much.

Thanks to all for the contributions (keep them coming). I certainly appreciate the folks that speak to the widely accepted daily driving type of scenarios. I certainly agree if you need big capabilities, there is no choice. But I'm sort of thinking about the evaluations folks might go through (like me) when having to purchase or replace an XJ. I personally when with a Subaru Forester because it makes better sense overall. What I save I can put toward an future XJ weekender. As mentioned, there was also a HUGE difference in insurance values. It had to do with the safety equipment and IIHS ratings. Forester is one of the cheapest in fact.

I will return to the XJ world, my recent return to the site has confirmed I still love them. Having working one, learned some things I want to do different (won't be getting anything with an 0331 head unless it has been replaced with new one). Good chance it'll be read again ;-)

I DD mine everyday. 75 miles round trip. Plus, a 400 mile trip every two weeks. I love driving it and it never let's me down. Buying new SUV is not going to get much better mpg, so why have a payment? If you do your maintenance, they are very reliable. It's all a personal choice.

for years I was heavily (still am sorta) involved in air cooled VW's, most every good find was because PO's lack of maintenance, its mandatory to adjust your valves with every oil change and you will have an air cooled ride last as long as a toyota.... people out of the community don't realize this...

okay fair enough, there for a minute I thought you were trying to justify letting your XJ go...

That is what I want really bad in the long run. It's really nice to have the best of both worlds.

Yeah I just want a turbo diesel sedan for highway miles, ha ha. It could be something other than VW, but there aren't many state-side options around. Driving from Denver to Tucson on 1 tank of fuel sounds mighty nice

Mind reading? "VW TDI" is pretty specific for North America, going to be a Jetta, Passat, or Golf. Nobody's selling a Rabbit for $4000 lol

5 speed TDI Golf is what I'd probably pick up. ~40mpg would begreat, and you can still fit a good amount of loot in the back, and find parking spots where mere mortals and their full size trucks can't fit!
