I traded a 93 honda del sol for my 87 xj. I have a 22 mile per day commute to work. It would take roughly $20 every two weeks for the honda where the jeep is costing around $50. With that being said i traded for extra room. I have a wife and a 3 year old, plus a baby on the way. I do hunt and enjoy the outdoors so losing the little extra money in gas is fine with me. My insurance is cheaper with the XJ as well.

I drive my XJ every day to work and back, about 20 miles total. I drive it on base probably for about another 10-15 miles back and forth to different places I need to go. I love it, get's a lot of looks and waves from other jeep owners.

Gotta deal with the rough ride to show the pride.

If he got 30MPG in a Honda, he'd spend only $1625.

So, it costs an extra $135/mo to drive the horrible gas mileage of an XJ.
The Honda costs $25,000.
A used beater XJ costs $3000.

You can calculate the break even on that extra $135/mo. or $1623/year.
The problem is you can get a car that gets 30mpg for like $2,000-$2,500... I dunno why you're thinking only brand new cars get that kinda MPG.

I completely agree, my Honda cost 1400 and everything worked including the AC. it was a rebuilt title but it was mechanically sound. I averaged 35mpg. If i had a longer commute (maybe 50 miles around trip) I would have considered keeping it.

i spend about $60 a wk in gas. full coverage on my jeep is $35 a month. I might avg $20 a mo in maintenance, which should decrease the longer I own it. so that's bout $300 total operating cost per month. hard to beat that IMHO. I've had engines, transmissions, mulch, Xmas trees lol almost everything in the back. and I used 4wd to get to work.

something to consider, true story. I couldn't get to work one day last year bc my 35 mpg Toyota corolla couldn't get out of my driveway after a snowstorm. I literally bought my jeep 1 week later. in less than a year I've put 20k miles on my jeep, the rolla is still sitting in the garage to this day.

I could pick up a VW TDI in decent shape for $4k-$5k and enjoy over 40 MPG lol. And I eventually will do just that.

For sure. My friend has a VW Jetta TDI. 5 speed, too. I'm very jealous of it.

The cost of gas is not a concern to me, either. I daily drove a 78 Power Wagon (4x4), between my last XJ and this one. Compared to the PW, my XJ gets great mpg's.

Dude the only way an old Power Wagon could use more gas is if you put a hole in the tank lol.

My commute is about 30 miles each way. I drive my XJ once or twice a week to work. I bought it mostly for when we get a snowstorm or if I need to haul the utility trailer (and to have fun).

I think one reason I like my jeep so much is bc of all the **** I catch from coworkers and friends. I make decent money and everyone seems to think I should be in a "new" truck. as much as I like some of the new trucks, a lot of the features are just silly and TOTALLY unnecessary. I'm an inherent cheapass and refuse to pay for a TRUCK optioned like my dads new caddy. if I needed a pulling truck I could understand paying for one. but I don't. the jeep covers everything I want. if it doesn't have it I can easily add it.

How's that Jetta do in snow and flood waters?
