To be honest, my XJ is my 2nd choice only because my 1st choice was destroyed. Where and when you commute should be your deciding factor. I commute 50 miles one way. In the winter, the roads can become impassible to a "regular" vehicle. My 1st choice was my Dodge diesel truck. About the same fuel mileage, but got around a lot better because of its weight and higher stand. If I lived "in town", then the Subaru would be my choice. But in town the roads are always tracked down or plowed.

I don't commute as far as you but recently replaced my 2003 Acura cl type s with a 93 XJ. The Acura got about 4-5 mpg more than the jeep but the high compression engine wanted 91 octane or better. When you factor the cheaper cost of 87 octane with the lower mpg of the jeep, the cost difference for the average driver is minimal.

Plus, it won't cost you $1000 to replace a freaking headlight on the jeep.
