Should Jeep XJs ever be considered a daily driver anymore.

I love my XJ as a DD. My commute is only about 200Km a month, I get what I consider is decent mileage for a modified vehicle. It was nice the other night when we had a blizzard and I was punching through 3' high drifts on my way home. The 10-15 awesome mpg cars that I saw abandoned make great DD in my neck of the woods. Think it all depends on what you require from a DD, and your disposable income. Where I live you would need a summer DD and winter DD. To me the XJ is a great comprimize

I just rolled 200,000 k ( wife bought it new in 2000) on my XJ over the holidays .
I drive my XJ daily , most of my trips out of town are between 400-1,000 miles .
I just swapped rear axles , put a new headliner/sound deadner in . I plan on driving my XJ for the duration . I get 18-20 mpg also

Mine does 70 mile round trips a day, 5 days a week
70 x 5 = 350
Plus the 35 mile round trip for school, 2 days a week
35 x 2 = 70
At the end of the week I do 420 miles, mostly highway with death wobble. I have to say my driving has improved.
On city streets XJs are decent commuters, on the highway uhhh

It tends to vibrate and shudder a bit at like 60 mph and over. Its a box on wheels so wind tends to blow it around a bit. Its just not a smooth comfy highway hauler. I know its got 206k miles so I dont expect it to ride like new and I didnt buy it to restore it so I can live with it being not perfect.
For me there a great D.D. I drive about 400 miles a week every week. I was dding a 72 baja bug before, but having to rebuild the motor every year sucked. I bought a Cherokee because it was cheap and I was broke .I like it because its almost bullet proof, its funny a vehicle that's 25 years old is still a good candidate for a daily driver. And who cares how many miles gets put on them,it out of warranty.

I'm blessed to have a work issued F150 4x4 so my '97 XJ is basically a weekender. Just picked up my 3rd Jeep and this one has 106k with a ton of life left in it. Mileage is nothing to brag about of course but I adore the damn things. Both my Daughters cut their driving teeth in a '96 country and they never came close to getting stuck in the terrible Northern, IL winters. I also drove an 88 & 89 on recruiting duty in Utah and many times in 2 feet of snow and treacherous conditions. Never got stuck.
Given that, they wouldn't be my 1st choice for commuting only because gas is a local rip-off. Wife DDs an '09 Escape and it gets much better mileage with a crap-load of power & comfort. Still not a Jeep!

It wouldn't be too wise to daily drive one great distances here in PA, especially with the new gas tax hike that was approved by our favorite people running the show. Mine is a weekend warrior, occasionally drive it to work.

I figured PA would be trying to run cars on coal. lol
Coal. LoL!! That would be awesome.
I live in PA ... commute 60 miles a day .... and have had 4 different XJ daily drivers. I've loved every darn one of them!!!!!!!
With that said, my current DD is a 2013 Civic and I'll never DD an XJ again .... but I have three of the darn things sitting in my back yard
Like someone else said, if you are young or broke, they make excellent DDs ... reliable, fun, capable, and cheap. But, usually when people start making more money, they "graduate" to something newer, but keep the XJ as an extra vehicle.
I just LOVE LOVE LOVE that a $3k XJ with 150k miles can do EVERYTHING that a $35k Ford Edge can do .... and BETTER.

the more miles you drive the less economical they are
cheap to buy
cheap to maintain
cheap to insure
gulp gas
the amount of miles i drive, the mpg difference between my 98 xj and my new diesel cruze pays for the car.

That diesel cruze is pretty cool. Terrible name but it beats having to get a TDI to run diesel. What's up with low sulphur diesel in the US, is that as big of a deal as the internet makes it out to be?
