The other day I was skiing Targhee in Idaho. When the lifts closed about 8 fresh inches had fallen since I got there. There were about 10 cars stuck in the parking lot. Powder on top of crust is tough for 2wd. I pulled right out and drove around helping people with there great on gas commuter cars. The peace of mind of being able to tackle the conditions is reason enough for me.

 

At least in SF there are A LOT on the road. I see a dozen every day. Most of them stock but some lifted. Seems like the "granola crowd" really love them.

 

I live in Minnesota so 4WD was a must for me when I was 'car shopping'.

 

Last winter we had a snow storm with "1 ft plus and I was driving unplowed roads no problem. Lots of people got stuck in cars overnight from what I heard, that's why I'm getting nates rear bumper this year so I can go pull people Out if need be. It could be fun and I could make a few bucks in the process

 

What's wrong with it?

 

Right there, that sentence made my day, and I've never even SEEN snow, well, except for a couple ski trips.

 

What I drive comes down to what I like. I've driven 4mpg jacked up trucks to 33mpg cars. Gas mileage is about the last thing I consider when I drive something. My biggest concern is do I have fun driving it. You gotta pay to play and if that means **** mpg to enjoy what I drive, I'm down.

 

X2, you gotta pay to play, it hurts though.

 

I'm only 3.2 miles from work. I drive it most of the time to save the miles on the car. I'd bike if it were safe(been hit once already)

 

Yeah getting hit gets old. I've been hit twice seriously and a few times where I've been thrown onto the ground. I'm already too old for that ****.

 

I have a couple jillion miles on a bike in my life, never been hit, knock on wood, , not that I'm Lance Armstrong, I've just been lucky, I should'a been dead before I hit 20.

 

All depends on your situation. I drive 450 miles a week for work (sales), I couldn't afford to drive my XJ. I run a VW Jetta (33 mpg), it's quick, paid for, great in the snow, great on gas.

For me, I probably wouldn't dd my XJ if I worked closer to my house. I like having it as a toy & run it on the weekends. Wouldn't want to waste it on driving to & from work. Well not every day. The money I save on gas goes into parts for my XJ. It's a Win/win for me.

If I had a stock XJ, and had a reasonable commute, I would drive it everyday. They're tanks, can't go wrong.

 

True, and it's not like I'm gonna save any gas when I have 400+ hp on tap either

 

Yep I have the Nates rear. Great bumper and SOLID. You wont regret it. I've pulled all kinds of stuff with that thing. Currently my Snowmoblie trailer.

 

I think the xj is the best option for it's services. a 4wd vehicle that gets decent mileage and is easily maintained can't be touched for $2k. that's why I bought one. I get 22+ mpg, drive 350 miles a week and know it'll start and run every time. I also am mechanically competent and have spent a good bit of time insuring this jeeps success...as would be required with any $2k vehicle.
