Should I replace the stock sound system in a 91 cherokee
I got a limited 91 xj with the tweeters in the dash and stuff... It sounds ok, but the bass is rattling horribly.
If im trying to keep this xj stock, would you track down used old speakers of the same model? or do you think its silly and just get modern nice speakers
How do you want to listen to music? Radio, CDs, Bluetooth or USB stick? I would not hesitate for 1 second to install aftermarket speakers. You can get amplifiers w/ Bluetooth built in, bypassing the Head Unit and thus allowing you to keep the stock one in place. Plenty of places to stash the amplifier out of sight, looks completely stock. You can also mount a Head Unit under the seat for example... If you had room to store it, I'd say replace it with a regular ol' single DIN head unit and put the OEM one on the shelf. Personally, I threw the OEM one in the trash and didn't look back. I personally do not value "stock". Bean Counters and Pointy Haired Bosses determine "stock". I can do better than "stock"...

yeah, im torn on the stock vs modded debate. and I certainly dont have room to start storing crap in my apartment.
Theres some kind of amp under the bench seat i think, maybe I can get away with just new speakers... I kinda love the old cassette player look, ha! I gotta go dig out my crate of tapes from my parents attic.
Streaming from my phone is pretty much the only way I listen to music anymore. There's 2 radio stations I listen to around here and their range is horrible. You could easily hide a Bluetooth capable amplifier completely out of sight. I guess you can still get tape adapters if you really want to trick out the retro look. There's always FM broadcast adapters as well.
This is a trick question, right? A 32 year old worn out sound system vs a new sound system. I really need to think about that one.
There have been a few improvements in sound systems '91. Check out Crutchfields. The speakers mount behind the stock grills so your doors don't look any different and they have the correct dash panels to make the new stereo fit correctly. You can even play them new fangled cd things but you may have to sell your cassettes on marketplace.
I like keeping my Jeep "Jeep" whenever I can.
I am trying to not swap the radio.
But the last thing I am is an audiophile so.....
And since all the my technology is older I don't need all that fancy stuff.
I consider myself lucky that I was able to score this iSimple device that lets me play my 160GB iPod through the factory system.
So I am good. LOL.

I agree but I'm also good with period correct. I pulled this JVC unit out of an '88 MJ for my '88 MJ. It works as well as I imagine it did when it was new and at first glance it didn't jump out to me as being an aftermarket stereo.

I could definitely get behind that.
Looks almost like the factory one and as you put it very period correct.
