Infinity 6 speaker stereo system
My 99 Limited has the 6 speaker infinity system with the power amplifier.
Since I bought it the sound has been very poor with sound is very low quality, scratchy sounding, with front speakers that are a much lower volume then the rear.
I would like to know what others have done to improve their systems and the results achieved.

I didn't have that sound system (my Jeep had 4 speakers), but I took out my ailing stock speakers and broken stock head unit and replaced them with a Pioneer head unit and Kicker speakers... Sounds great.

With decent speakers the Infinity system sounds good. replace the speakers and try the Infinity system. If you change to an aftermarket radio make sure you hook the blue/white lead of the Infinity to the Blue lead of the aftermarket connector.

It looks like I have three options.
1) Replace all six speakers including the tweeters, I wonder how hard it will be to find a fit for them.
And then if I am not happy with sound...
2) Replace the head unit.
3) How about the amp, keep it or replace?
How difficult is it to replace the head unit? I am guessing I would also be installing a pocket since the height of the existing unit is larger?
Suggestions on equipment you have installed and are happy with and the best place to buy.

I built a sound system for around $400 and it sounds great, I dont think I will ever need to upgrade anything because it sounds just awesome. You dont need this much higher end stuff, but it gives you an idea of what all you would need.
Almost all used components and after 6 months, everything sounds and works great.
Head unit (Pioneer 590ib, $35 used on ebay)
Speakers (Only running a front soundstage, which alot of car audio guys prefer. Image Dynamics CTX65-CS, very smooth sound stage - $150)
Subwoofer (Alpine Type R 10" - $70)
Speaker Amp (JL 320.4, running 120w rms to each front channel - $50 on ebay)
Subwoofer amp (US Amps MD1D, 930w rms to the subwoofer - $70)
Wire (All KnuKonceptz)
After I had my friend tune it, it sounds ****ing amazing. I now could care less if it is rush-hour or not
The head unit is the easiest thing to replace. Speakers are quite easy as well, you literally remove the old ones, and replace with new ones. 6.5" speakers are an easy fit if they are not too deep (mine are, and my pass. side window would hit the top without a spacer ring).
Standard low-buck speakers will easily clear though. 6.5" Kickers/Infiniti/Polk would be an OK place to start, if you are just looking for adequate sound.

Ok, so I decided to replace the head unit, two door speakers and the two rear speakers. I am planning to not do anything with the 1" door tweeters.
Do the tweeters have there own wire runs back to the radio or they spliced into the door speaker wires? I am thinking I would not want to use them since they are 16 years old. How do I disconnect them?
On to next question. Run all new speaker wires front and rear or use existing wires?

I had the same system. Switched it out for a separate amp and a set of polk components up front. The difference was night and day. Just gotta find room for the tweeters and run speaker wire through the doors.

Both Pioneer and Kicker are quality components for the every day person. Their 6.5 speakers retail for close to the same amount. Both my Kickers and my Pioneers sound great. No need to diss either brand.

Bought some nice Pioneer speakers and decided to connect them to my rear overhead. When connecting I noticed the wire color codes are drivers side brown wires with yellow and blue stripe and passenger side blue wires with red and white stripe.
So what would the speaker wire with black stripe connect to?
Wondering what color code will be found when I pull the door speakers out.
As of now I am just replacing speakers, leaving the factory Infinity head and amp in place to see what it sounds like with fresh speakers.

Finally got around to changing the speakers, still the sound quality is very poor so now bought a new head unit.
Tell me more about
"If you change to an aftermarket radio make sure you hook the blue/white lead of the Infinity to the Blue lead of the aftermarket connector."
When you say blue/white are you talking two separate wires, one blue and one white to connect to the blue aftermarket connector?
