Should I buy a Comanche for $500 or so?

There is a 87 long bed available, asking price of $800. I am thinking I could load it up for $500 or so. Body is rust free, drivetrain is out of it. Interior is mostly disassembled. I don't want a long bed but would like to build a nice short bed. I am thinking the cab would be useful if I find a short bed with rust. If I find a rust free short bed later, think I can part out the long bed and make my money back? What are some of the valuable parts on these?

I can weld. I have a sawz all. BUT, I have been reading online and it appears it would be a PITA to convert to short bed. Do you know something I don't?

No you know more then I do about the conversion. I have never read up on it. But I know cutting and welding quite well. To me, it seems pretty straight forward. I saw someone who bobbed a long bed (probably a lot easier) and it turned out quite awesome. That's the route I would go.
Edit - it was on this forum actually. I love it.

The long beds are longer on both sides of the rear wheel. That means I would have to move the rear axle or cut and splice the frame to fit the short bed on it. The linked bobbed long bed looks good lifted. But I plan to drop mine, think bobbed would look funny.

That's ok. The seller said the truck is worth more than the $400 I offered and did not counter. They have it listed at $775. With the motor and trans out, interior gutted, and being a long bed, it just isn't worth that much to me. The cab is rust free, so I thought it would be nice to pick up for the cab and part out the rest. BUT, I guess they aren't ready to get it out of their lawn just yet. I'm not in a hurry for another project, maybe they will change their mind.
