Yep, use em on my new rough country's. I take em off and clean them out very well along with the shock after sinking the jeep in water/mud offroad though. If the bottom -and- top of the boot aren't clamped down, (Mine are now) it can fill up with stuff and hold that against the shock.

No...but I did at first. I do mostly rocks. I see mud once in a while, and there is a lot of snow and salt in the winters. I have had cheapo Procomp ES3000's on without boots for several years, with no failure or rust yet.
I was running them at first on the fronts. I cut the passenger one off for a reason I do not remember. Later on, I noticed I was breaking shock bolts on the front driver regularly. It turns out the boot was compressing to it's max when I was flexing, and weakening that bolt each time. I cut that one off, and no more breaky break
That is not to say this would be the case for everyone, or that they are a bad idea. I would think more about it if I had more expensive shocks that "recommended" having them.

I just put new shocks on my DD 96 cherokee sport 2 inch lift. They look really tight with the bright red boots under a painted por15 under carraige and wheel wells. The shocks are ranch rs5000

I called up Top gun customz way back when. The guy recomended not to run them due to moisture, dust and salt getting to them. That was a good enough reason for me to take them off.
