No 4wd should be without a highlift jack. Better than a winch.
I carry the following.
high lift jack
50ft cable w/hoops and hooks
30ft recovery strap
20ft log chain
various hooks/clevis's
straps/tie downs
motor oil
gear oil
duct tape
zip ties
enough tools to remove axles and or carriers/wheels/brakes etc....
hand saw
spare tires
shovel
air compressor
tire plugs, a lot of them
mini sledge
bottle jack
knife
mini tool set.
Probably forgot a few things
Oh yea a rain suit
extra clothes
extra shoes
fire extinguisher
maybe thats about it?

i've gone from a full on tool set in my jeep, to a small ammo box full of necessities. if you feel the need to have tools to fix ANYTHING while just driving around (not wheeling), you need to re-consider the condition of the parts on your truck, and start replacing things. i carry:
tow strap
channel locks
large adjustable wrench
full set of metric and sae sockets in a small bag that fits in the ammo box with everything else
one spare 1310 ujoint, one spare 760 ujoint, set of full circle clips and ubolts
spare pair of ball joints (one side)
phillips screwdriver, flat head screwdriver
diagonal pliers
hub nut socket
zip ties
~3' of wire
electrical tape
hose clamps
brake caliper spacer thingie, h-block, and bolt (dumb 8 lug 44 caliper hardware)
four spare lug nuts
some rubber hose line
everything except the tow strap fits in the 14x9 or so ammo box. i also carry a quart of oil, PS fluid, tranny fluid, and gear oil in a small milk crate. I have a 35lb bottle of C02, and a winch going on soon. once my tire carrier is built and i can get my cargo area in order everything will be going in an action packer box bolted to the floor.
i dont add anything when going on a wheeling trip except a spare driveshaft. less is more, in case i need something else, i have a cell phone.

I guess, what I carry is for wheeling, since I drive one of my other rigs most of the time on the street.
I wouldn't carry chain it's to dangerous, I've seen two of them break and take out rear windows.
I wheel in two to four foot, or more of snow in the mountains so I carry recovery equipment, including but not limited to, a winch, a 100 foot winch line extension, two 30 foot straps, a 12 foot tree strap, four shackles, a high lift jack, shovel, axe, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, snacks, tools, fluids, and some spare parts
Plus some extra warm clothing.
