That's what I'm thinking. There has to be a cheaper version that is just as good. I was thinking about a piece of plywood with slats of wood bolted to it to give traction.

Seriously, though, a while back some guy in Minnesota had them for $25 each on Craigslist and would ship them to people at the buyer's expense. I found him using Searchtempest. I didn't buy any at the time, but at some point when I'm ready for them, I'm sure someone will be selling.

Floor mats! I use the less expensive ones that are available at every parts store in the country. They are always there, don't take up any room and double as a floor mat(haha). Just dig around the tire and stuff under as far as possible, ease or rock onto it. If it gets destroyed, so what it was cheep otherwise clean as necessary and stick it back in the floor.

I'm running black steel rims without beadlocks and I have ran them at 2 psi in the snow, so single digits on sand should be no problem if you are running radial tires and not bias plys.
This is for sand! not rocks. As for 15psi for a 4000lb rig that is way to much air unless you are talking about bias ply tires.

Bias on my steel rims radials on my beadlocks, but 2 psi. is way to low for me unless the snow was really hard pack even then I'd worry about hitting even a small rock/stump and ruining both the tire and rim.
Guess I'm a coward at heart when it comes to that low of air pressure. Even with beadlocks I try not to go that low because of so much sidewall being exposed where we wheel at all kinds of terrain on one single run.

When I'm running that low of pressure I'm on 4-7 foot of snow so I don't worry about hitting a stump, rock or anything except a tree. The only tire I've ever lost a bead on was a bias ply at 5 psi on a side hill. That is in over 35 years of wheeling almost all terrains.

This is what I did with 2 used ones that I bought at a garage sale for $5 each they were beat up a bit but fine for what I wanted. I did find that snow will come in through the openings if its soft and then you just spin.
I did fix that problem last summer when the same thing happened in small creek gravel sunk down in it. When I got home I fixed them with 2 old inter-tubes I cutup and used the cheap black wire ties to hold them on one side of the mats, no more sinking. They do at times tear the tubes and rip out the wire ties but for less than $12 invested they work fine and I carry them on my cargo rack. The way they are made makes them very easy to clean just throw them on the ground a few times and your good to go.
