"Presents" from previous owners
no head unit, lots of extra wires, 4 brand new tires not balanced, about $50 in change, and when he cut the rear fendershe cut past the pinch seam except for about 4 inches on each side, so I have to finish cutting and weld some sheet metal in there.
The good: A fire extinguisher mount and a no smoking sticker inside (my friend and I are convinced my XJ was used for 4WD tours)
The bad: Completely blown speakers.
The ugly: Rear LSD filled with gear oil, but no friction modifier. It took me three months to figure out what was making that creaking noise, then I changed the diff oil and it magically went away.
Oh and a bottle of hemp lotion in the glove box.
Reading through this thread I keep finding things that mine has. Driver door hinge got sort of broken so it was ghetto welded back on, welds are about half broken so I am very careful with that door.

right after buyig the jeep, on my way home i fidn out it wont hold a speed over 50mph. it would lose power and start acting stupid with any speed over 50. my wife is upset cuz i just spent bought something i may need to tow home... next day i do a tune up and find out the plugs and wires were ORIGINAL, or damn close to it. every plug wire broke apart and dust was falling from the inside, every plug was burnt and corroded to the point of falling apart when i touched them. Took the cap off the rotor and the points inside broke off... i honestly think it hadnt had a tuneup in over 150k miles. it had 202k when i bought it. Also, air filter was BLACK. oil was black and slightly sludged... after i replaced everything the jeep ran like brand new!

old school Nokia cell phone behind the radiator, some mechanic probably dropped it there and went nuts looking for it...so if you ever worked on a 97 and lost your phone I got it.lol
where do i start...well 1st off i bought my rig for $500. the "lift" lift that was on it were just alluminum spacers.
the main leaf on the passenger side was broken by the front combination bushing.
electrical was a nightmare! power windows didnt work, locks didnt work, stereo didnt work, power seats didnt work, etc....
leaky seals
stripped bleeder valves on calipers and the bleeder valves on the wwheel cylinders were completely snapped off.
body decently straight but slightly rusty
for the most part not...baaddd..... haha

scratch my previous post, just went out and got curious as to the wiring in the dash, the power wire for the radio, which wasn't there, was small enough to put through the eye of a needle, and i found an extra fuse box that was added in but not connected to anything along with hundreds of dead wires everywhere.
So I spent the last two hours removing useless wire from my dash!!!

Rusty in the rear (but every where else clean esp for a car in my area)
Cig buts
Go army stickers
2 bucks in change
Rear window spoiler thing (keeps crap of the window)
Lund visor
A stand alone not hooked up car alarm horn
Original dealer packet (window sticker, build sheet, checklist, manual)
Passenger window didnt work atall ( now it works all the time for driver, 50/50 for pass control)
A/c didnt work (still doesnt)
Fan only blew on defroster (fixed)
Driverside lock didnt work (fixed by removing bent part for manual button)
Stereo CD player shows Err
A Cd I chucked (I never found out what was on)
Stereo will cut in and out during first hour of driving only on rainy days
Driverside front speaker only works at certain angle
Vacuum line under hood line was fixed with thick fuel line (Well it still works so why not I guess)
One fog was burned out, I replaced it, now niether work
Various occasional elec problems (one day entire instrument cluster went out, glad thats only happened once)
Dents and crappy mismatched paint touch ups
Only recently found out that PO had fixed a large hole in the front diff breather tube with tape....
But I still think I came out on top with a clean 2000 2 door for 1200... and the guy was courteous (He was selling for his son who had been shipped out). He informed me about possible elec problems stemming from cutting and splicing of wires.
Biggest surprise Ive ever gotten was when someone poured nasty oily **** into my tank while staying at a friends house. I was pissed... $300 wasnt a number that eased my anger.
(this was less than a month after I purchased it)

this isn't an xj, but i think it qualifies - the PO repaired some rusted fuel lines with rubber hoses on my toyota pickup. they failed on me about an hour away from my house in the middle of nowhere. NO ONE could figure out what the problem was. I even had some mechanic tell me it was the head gaskets, because they fail so often in those trucks. My first guess was fuel pump, and I was the closest to being right. I hate that truck so much.
o yeah.. the PO also replaced the gas tank fuel strainer with a SOCK. it had almost dissolved all the way and had fallen off.

not me, but when one of my buddys bought his grand cherokee he was cleaning it out and the PO accidentally left a brand new amp under the back seat.
needless to say he was really excited he found that.
