I have to say I'm lucky to never have to run into a fender problem with 31s on a 3 inch lift. My buddy chopped his up and has some chunks and cuts in his tires now.

Its doesn't just makes me shake my head. I daily drive mine and I know I will have to replace it one of these days. Well the more that get hacked up and beat to death the less there will be for me to daily drive. I love XJ's because they are basic and perfect for what I do (hunting, camping, junkyarding, basic hauling, regular mall crawling activities). I don't care what people do honestly with the rig they pay money for but its makes me go "well dang there's another hacked up one". Different strokes different folks

well I have front bump stops cause the front suspension will travel until stoped. in the rear I have a custom pack first designed for my freinds two door. the pack consits of the main leaf off of the upcountry xj. then a second leaf out of a 3/4 chevy pick up that was close to the same length. then we assorted the packs makeing sure that the distance from the end of leafs on top and the leafs packed below reduced the flex point that often bends on these xjs. after first running this setup i wanted some more lift so i changed to the mj shackle. then tested flex and fitment the 32s i had rubbed i removed fenders for clearance. and I did so when i went to 33s. i also made sure that at no point do my leaf packs go to flat or a negitive bend. I realize its hard to see in the attached photo but that is as close to the metal my rear tires ever get. now with this being said when I got to 35s i will no longer be able to run with out bump stops in the rear so i will be installing them. if I was able to us face book at my location i would attach the video of me jumping my jeep to show the travel charistict of it. with the other packs that we have designed for my friends for other xj applications we test and build bump stops. I never said bump stops are pointless.

yes I realize the fender flares look bad they are not finished yet.

^^you are still stressing out the leafs... where does the stress go if your pack wont over bend? its gotta go somewhere...into the eyes?...that would suck to break. i understand your logic, my leafs are super stiff too, but i also have dinky white body shocks...i'll just use those as bumpstops till they pop and i'm forced to buy decent ones lol

generic white body shocks...theres another popular mod i hate.

It doesnt matter what springs you run they will occur stress we both know this. i know that this pack which i mention was designed for my buddies two door it was built around five years ago. it has lasted so far. as for wear the stress goes yes the eyes do occer some stress but the extended shackle and closely distrubuted leafs help to even the load through the spring. instead of haveing around two to three inches of main leaf between the eye and the second leaf the second leaf is located around one inch away. when i replaced the polly rear leaf mounts a year ago my brother and I both inspected the packs from top to bottom leafs looking for any signs of fatigue i realize we didnt x ray the packs but we didnt find anything.

shocks are a hole nother aspect of suspension tuning. but i do understand the generic white shock statement.

I have a Sienna Pearl 01 and its been beat hard but I'm slowly redoing it. This bums me out when a almost perfect jeep gets the crap kicked out of. Buy a $500.00 jeep and start from there.
This is what I've been arguing the whole time. THANK YOU

That makes me a bit sad. Such a clean XJ..

Not sure how it is down south, but around here XJ's are beginning to get really hard to find. One in minty shape and low miles is nearly impossible these days.

Exactly. I know of two trashed, under 200k XJs for sale in my area for less than 100 bucks. When I have the cash, I'll buy one of those and hack the fenders. There won't be a set of tin snips within a hundred yards of my 97 over my dead body. And she's really not even THAT nice

Tin snips?? Why the hell would someone use some damn tin snips?? Geeeeezus!! I have become very good at cutting fenders and never would've attempted to go at it with tin snips.

Cutting wheels on a grinder and they come out really nice!

Or some air shears that's what I used, on the front at least.

Grinder and cutting wheel worked nice in the back.

Then again I went higher then most people do...

I've seen a few build threads where people do the cut and fold with tin snips. It's horrifying.

If you cringe when people trim the fenders on nice xj's I suggest you don't read this post.

The xj i had in 2006:

That xj in 2009:

The white xj's replacement getting ready for battle in 2009:

and Right now:

Keep in mind I had a blast with every one of these xj's and ultimately were all retired from different forms of unibody failure. The black one actually still runs, and I plan on wheeling it again.
