Default NP 231 J trouble

Hey I'm assuming my chain has worn out in my tc because of the popping on the initial acceleration. Having trouble finding a chain for a np231j though. Everything says it fits 231 or 233. Doesn't give me the last letter on anything? Can y'all help me out on what chain to get?

You sure it's not your ujoints binding? You sure it's not your exhaust hitting the crossmember? You sure it's not that your slip yoke needs a generous amount of grease? I'd check the easier things first rather than going straight into popping open the case and messing with the internals.

Yeah I checked it all with my buddy driving it while I was under it looking. Watched some you tube videos of it and it sounded the same as well and they said it was their tc chain.

I checked the link. It isn't detailed on the C or J either. It says all. But I seen where another guy had trouble finding one for a J so it made me check a little closer before I ordered one.

Called and talked to the parts man at the local jeep dealership and he said he had two different chains for that jeep. The 231j didn't pull up anything in his computer so I gave him the serial number and it didn't match what he had either... So I'm at a stand still on ordering it...

I'm by no means an expert on the subject, I am just assuming the same chain would be used. Really not sure though. Call a few other companies and ask

The J is just to designate that it's a Jeep case and the C is for Chevy. The cases are otherwise the same internally. The only differences between 231 cases is how they're clocked, the input gear cut and bearing size changed in '95 across the board, and some Chevy and Dodge cases have a wider chain and 6-gear planetary (HD designation, though not all HD cases have the 6-gear planetary). 10-027 is the Cloyes part number. I'd also like to add that their parts guy is a dolt.

Yeah that's the difference I saw. One has a 1" wide chain the other has a 1 3/8" chain. So mine being a 94 it should be the 1" correct?

They only used a 1" chain in the 231J cases.
