Default Need Some Advice Here!

Hello everyone,

I signed up here to read up about XJ's. I recently decided I wanted to get one as a project vehicle. I have been looking around the OKC area and haven't found much. I just found one on craigslist and wanted opinions on weather this would be a good investment or not.

Here is the ad
I have an ugly 1990 jeep cherokee sitting beside my house that my wife hates. she says it goes or she does. I love her and want to keep her (the wife) so the jeep has to go. like i said its ugly but it runs. it is 4 wheel drive, 4 door, and has the 4.0 six cylinder. i have too many projects and not enuff cash. please help me out. i have a clear TX title in hand. tags and inspection are both out. may trade for wire welder that runs off 110 or a good riding lawn mower or maybe something else. let me know what you have.

I called the guy and he said the body has 336k miles on it. He thinks the motor has been replaced because it runs strong. Claims there is not leaks anywhere but the body is in rough shape, no rust. Anyway he came down to $500 and said I could probably drive it home but it has a bad tie rod end.

**Admis** If this is the wrong forum please let me know

Thanks

It depends on how much work you want to do. 336k is generally considered the end of the xj life cycle. If you are mechanically inclined and are willing to rebuild most of the car then 500 isnt a horrible deal. i would consider it a fair price. Right now is a good time to buy an xj because the junkyards are loaded from cash for clunkers. But whenever buying a jeep it is always best to wait for a project you are comfortable with. So asses your ambitions and abilities and make a decision. I cannot give any more advice without detailed pictures of the vehicle and a PO's word is not always true.

GL with your decision

For $500 no rust and if it really runs good and has not leaks then I'd go for it if you have the time to put into it. You can likely get body replacements around at local JY's. One thing to keep in mind the 90 is a Renix and has a closed cooling system and is a non HO. For $500 I'd buy it plus it could have a D44 in it.

Looks like it would be an awesome "project". i would get it for $500, the parts alone are worth that!

Thanks everyone. It is over 200 miles from me, I'm having a friend from the area go check everything out tomorrow. If it's in the condition the owner claims I will have it up here next weekend.

Shoot if I could find a 91-93 for $500 I would snag it for parts and sell the rest.

Jeep turned out to be a bust. Mileage was actually over 350k not 336,
Engine had a nasty knock, the front drive shaft was missing. The roof was a bit caved in.
Search is back on.

Roof looks fine in the pics you put up. Sure it wasnt just a sagging headliner?
If I had a trailer I would have offered him 300-350 cash. Missing front driveshaft could just be because the U-joints went bad but it could be something worse.

Nope the roof is caved some in the center. I couldn't tell from the pictures either. I also was not worried about the front drive shaft. He was dead set on having $500 for it. Had he dropped to $300 I would have taken it.

I actually picked up a 88 Cherokee laredo last night from a guy that lives in the same town as me. Paid $500 for it and drove it home with no issues. When I got off work today I pulled the fender flares, pin striping and badges. The carpet had already beed removed so I'm going to finish the tear down then rebuild.
