That has got to be a keyless entry receiver but I have never seen one like that before.

It's the XJ flux capacitor. If you hit 88 MPH, you'll see.

Unfortunately, XJ's rarely see 88 MPH.

I'm pretty sure you guys are right,
The xj has a ton of options on it. power seats, power windows , power locks, sun roof , the works. so a keyless remote / alarm isn't a big stretch.
not even going to bother searching for the remote , because if i found it i'll bet it comes with a huge price tag LOL.

Ebay you can buy used oem remotes for anything.

I only found ones for the 90's XJ'S. I'm afraid of buying one and it doesn't work. It's just a waste of money

There was a guy on ebay they sold rebuilt boards with remotes wish i could remember his name.

It was a garage door opener option back then. They rarely worked even when new.

If it's a garage door opener, what's the purpose of the three IR phototransistors and the infrared filter? I'm genuinely curious.

Is it how you program it?

See if you can remove the board with out breaking it,See if you can find any numbers on the board and google them.
