Default my transfer case??? what is it

I have a 97 XJ but I don't know what transfer case I have and also I want to know if I can put it in full time 4 wheel drive or not

For the transfer case?? I just pull it straight back once for 4 hi then N and after that it's 4 low

You have the NP231. No full time 4WD. Those transfer cases do not like dry pavement so be careful.
This is what the NP242 will full time selector looks like.

Thanks how much is a NP242 I would like full time 4wd as well as part time

TC doesn't cost much if you can find a good second hand one, it's the labour involved in fitting one. DIY - free!

I'm not worried about the labor my cousin owns a shop so I have plenty of tools to do it I just need to find one

you will need the t-case, the shifter with gate and bezel. make sure you get one from at least a 91 4L, that way you get the correct (23) spline count.

Find someone who wheels their XJ and has a 242, I'd almost bet they'd be more than willing to trade you. Not much aftermarket support for the 242 and I personally don't trust a t-case with a diff in it.
