looking at a 1984 Cherokee your thoughts?
Hello agian I'm looking for some advice on if I should buy this Cherokee or not. Its a 1984 cherokee it's a two door 4x4 four cylinder four speed. I have been looking for a manual two door 4x4 for a few weeks. And all two doors that have poped up have either been automatic, two wheel drive or had a bad transmission or Engine. The guy says its mechanicly sound and that he replaced the floor pans. And that the rockers had surface rust (don't they rot from the inside out?). My main concerns are that its a four cylinder and a four speed. How will it do on the highway? I only live a couple miles from work and will only get up to 70mph a few times a year. It will mostly be driven around town but I do need to drive at 55 mph to get to the next town over a couple times a week. I did a search but all I could find was newer jeeps with and automatic transmission or five speed transmission. But nothing about a four speed. Thanks for the help im going to look at the cherokee later today.

I personally would look for a Renix Jeep, that's 87-90. Fuel injected engines, a choice between the 2.5 or the 4.0, and 5 speeds. Although in the 84-86 the 2.5 is definitely the engine to get.
Really though, around town I never use 5th gear in mine anyways (87 2.5 5 speed), so the 4 speed with the 2.5 would be fine around town. If you drive a lot of miles on the highway, which it doesn't sound like you do, the extra gear would be nice, but I wouldn't pass up a 2 door 4x4 just because it had a 4 speed instead of a 5 speed.
Really, it would depend on the mileage and price as to whether or not I would buy that one. I do love the 2 doors, and the 2.5 is a good engine.

I'm about to go look at the Cherokee now the guy wants 1200 but with all the problems I think I might be able to get it for 1000 or less. Of corse if its not going to work for what I want it to do I'll just walk away. I already told the guy I would look at it. And I'm not going back on my word so when I get back I'll let you all know. With all the advice on here saying that its a bad idea, It'll take a steal of a deal for me to come home with it. What do you think it's worth?

Even a free Jeep is too expensive in most cases. How did the guy replace the floor pans? With actual stamped replacements, or an old stop sign and duct tape? Honestly, a grand is too much for an 84 4 cylinder. You're not going to be happy with it if you do decide to buy it.

I'd say keep hunting. I looked at a lot of jeeps over a 4-6 month period before I found mine. You can find old gems but you typically have to look long an hard to find them.

Ok just got done looking at it long story short it was bad. The jeeps exterior was bad as I expected but the interior was trashed rips tears everywhere no headliner. We couldn't turn start it because the the key got stuck the owner had to lean in to start it. The clutch was going out. The engine ran good and the transmission shifted good. I know I'm not getting it it just needs way to much. But it did confirm that I really want a cherokee. Just got to find the right one for the right money.

Yeah, you're better off passing on that one for the price. Its not worth that, I only paid $500 for my 87, and wouldn't have paid any more for it, and it ran and drove great, and was in pretty good shape.

Yeah I realize that I'm way better off without it. I started looking with $1500 and it seems that all the ones I find for that or under have engine, transmission, transfer case problems or have rusted out floors or rockers. It looks like I might have to wait and add more money to the budget and keep searching for a good deal wile I'm waiting.
