I'd like your opinions, folks. I'm looking at maybe buying a '93 Cherokee Country 4x4. 169,000 miles, auto, part & full-time 4H, clean CARFAX. Dealer wants $2995 plus tax, etc. Haven't driven it, but, it starts up smoothly, engine is clean looking, appears to be in good shape.

I'll drive it first, but, is it a good deal as is, should I offer a lower price, or skip it altogether? Thanks for the info! Here's a couple pics....

Jeez... around my area, a jeep like that should go for around $1000... Awful paint. You're paying extra since you're buying from a dealer... Dunno how it works in AZ.. but if you buy a car from a private party here you don't pay sales tax. So you're paying 3k plus tax for a 21 year old car. Try to get the VIN to get an AutoCheck/Carfax. There are ways to get free AutoChecks. Here is what 3k will get you in around me:

1999 with 98k miles, 4x4, perfect paint, clean interior.

If it seems worth it to you, then go for it. The best advice I can give you is to test drive it, go home, and sleep on it. If there's something you don't like about it that you can't/don't want to fix or change, just wait for something better to come along.
Also, try to figure out why the rear door was replaced. At least, it looks replaced..

I just bought a 93 country. It's got 160k, auto 4x4, all that, just needed a brake line and I paid $500. I think that ones way overpriced

There's no way in hell I'd pay 3,000 plus for that... Ever. That jeep would go 6-800 around here until the seller was talked down to around 500.

Even in this country that is well overpriced unless there is around $2000 in a bag in the boot/trunk.

Ask what they paid for it in trade and how much they have put into the vehicle, then offer a 100 bucks more. If they won't tell you what they have into this Jeep, walk away. Don't get suckered into any kind of aftermarket warranty, those are just a money grab for the seller. I would not pay more than 2500 for that Jeep. Just because somebody paid three dollars for a Jeep does not mean they all should cost three dollars, that one looks pretty decent, but not 3 grand decent.

If only the paint looked as good as the interior.

Anyway, lately I've noticed the price of Cherokees actually going UP, (I search Yahoo autos once in a while). Dealers are becoming aware of the desire for XJ's. Old XJ's with low mileage from dealers are ridiculous priced, (Low mileage pre-97's, asking 4K!) That's with no lift or big tires.

I've had a few people come up to me and say "Nice Cherokee, did ya know these things have developed a cult following online"? (Really, I had NO idea )

Thanks folks! Been on the prowl online for other rigs today. Even though the '93 is still on my list (might see how low they'll go), I've also spotted a nice red '98 ZJ w/126k on it for $5995. Try to go look at it on Monday and get more info.

I wouldn't pay $3,000 for that.

Have you tried scouting out a local public auto auction? If you're lucky, you can pick up a newer '97+ XJ for a little over $1,000 bucks (at least, I know I can in my area). Just don't expect it to be perfect.

Thanks for the opinions, folks! I actually bit the bullet today and purchased a '98 Grand Limited w/4.0, for around $5000. Didn't have much choice. Only had 1 rig between the Mrs. & I, the RHD XJ. So, after looking for a Jeep this weekend, I found this:

It's got 126,000 miles, auto, leather, all the niceties. It drives nicely, Only a few small paint nicks, and spent all of it's life here in Arizona, so, no rust. It'll do. It's so nice and comfy....
