I am a mechanic by trade so whenever I find that I have doubles of anything I put them in the jeep. You can never be too prepared. But as a simple tool list I would have the normal stuff... Wratchets/wrenches/sockets/hammer/screwdriver/torx sockets...

i was thinking about getting a crate or something and have Coolant, a quart of oil, and some other things of that sort in there. i put my tool box in there the other day. but nothing in there is really worth having in there besides my Volts meter and my screwdrivers...should i get some cheaper tools or maybe craftsman?

Craftsman would be a perfectly good tool just to have in the xj for emergencys. Even some harbor freight stuff is doable. I would definitely suggest having oil and coolant on hand.. Especially coolant.

I used harbor frieght hand tools. In my experience they don't break like craftsmans.

I carry every fluid the XJ uses in a trunk like thing that I got at Walmart for $20. The one here still sales it in the automotive department and I got it 10 years ago....
I make sure I always have at least 2-3 quarts of oil and 2 gallons of coolant plus a gallon of water and an empty gallon jug amongst other things lol....

I keep a basic socket set, my Haynes Manual, hammer, wire strippers, screwdriver, assorted standard ratcheting/open end wrenches, a bunch of electrical stuff and pliers, small torx and hex drivers. Also a jug of oil, and antifreeze in a crate.

For occasionally working on your jeep harbor freight tools are just fine. For daily use if you work as a mechanic they will break, not be up to par. But there are some things that you just can't go wrong with.. Like a mallet.. Snap on=125 harbor freight =10 bucks lol

Vice grips and a hammer. My alternator quit on me on my way to Pa, few taps with the hammer got me there and back

I went to do a motor swap yesterday, and didn't have to load up any tools. I keep every tool and every fluid I would ever need in there, including my electric impact. If I don't have my tools, something will break.
