I own a Jeep, because it is a Jeep. I don't think comfort, and mileage was ever part of the deal. If I want mileage I will ride my Suzuki Super Moto. It gets about 50mpg, with me rideing. I can get it down to 20mpg if I try hard. LMAO

when i have a long trip ill use my GFs Altima but other than that my xj is my DD and my heart. After driving the company van all day getting back in my rig feels good. So for the original poster go easy on ur pedal dont race ppl and if you see a red light a block away let go the gas pedal and cruise to it. Other than that no matter how bad gas WILL GET. Ill probably smile when i fill her up cause no other car feels right no more

I've been keeping my foot to a feather, however, I need to get new tires and alignment fixed, so hopefully this will improve things.

Do you, or anyone for that matter, know that if removing vehicle weight increase gas milage? My brother tells me it won't, but I just don't believe him.

it does but theres not much you can remove on an xj that will help. Mainly your cargo load but how much do you store in your rig. Yes tires help proper inflation too. Im against this but putting a lil extra air help however youll get uneven wear on the tires. If its been a while since youve changed your plugs cap and rotor change those and the air filter and lastly yes syntec oil makes a lil difference as does keep the injectors clean and the o2 sensors should be replaced, the upstream ones. Think i covered everything. Taking a brushguard off might help but ill never take mines off i like the look even though itll mess the car up more probably in an accident. Well my wrists and thumbs hurt now lol

I'd like to use synthetic but hear that when you use it in older automobiles with high mileage it can potentially, and in many cases, cause unexpected oil leaks because of pre-existing oil deposits creating a seal. I also like my grill guard. Gives it a more aggressive look. But if it saves gas by even 1MPG, it's coming off and going on Craigslist/Ebay. I'll be sure to get the rotors changed. I'm sure it needs that. Didn't know that helps.

Start with semi syntec. I've used semi syntec for a while and finally went to full syntec. Haven't had leak issue but older rigs could be different.

Anything that deals with the combustion of gas helps your mpg so with all new plugs and etc the gas will be combusted more efficiently

I'm averaging around 15-16 city with a 3 inch lift, 31 inch all terrains, a roof rack, and roof mounted full size spare. I've been driving normally with my shift points around 2500 RPM. The best thing that's ever happened to my fuel economy is switching from winter blend to summer blend gasoline. I was getting 12mpg without the roof rack or spare and that was horrible.

A couple of things you can try to help your gas mileage out are
-Hyper-miling. (coast to red lights until they turn green for a rolling start)
-Running Synthetic 10w30
-Keeping your RPMs below 2000 when possible
-Changing out your spark plugs
-Changing out your spark plug wires for a set of nice ones (I'm running MSD wires)
-Changing the Air filter after wheeling in dusty or muddy conditions
-Changing out the 02 sensors
-Finding gas stations with pure gasoline or gasoline with a low ethanol content (below 10%) Ethanol HURTS engine efficiency.

All of these have helped me gain a little better gas mileage.

It was my understanding that the rear O2 wouldn't have anything to do with engine performance...only emissions. Of course, I may be wrong on that.

I must report, however, that the best thing I ever did for fuel mileage increase was, hands down, the IAT relocation mod. The fella that figured this out has done a wonderful service to the forum. I relocated that sucker into the air box and went from 270 max miles per tank to a now consistent 320-340 miles per tank.

I did not need to do the intake restriction cone removal....I dont know if the previous owner removed this restriction cone or if the 1998s didn't have them.

Anyhow, fellas. Take 30 minutes to clean and relocate that IAT. Best thing I ever did.

I have a 95 Laredo I bought for$300 and I two years fixing it up and doing everything the kid that had it didn't do I put about 2000 into fixing her up, upgrading a few things ect. But when I first got her I was getting 8 mpg! I did a tune up, plugs wires rotor and cap, air filter, oil change and fuel filter change and now I get about 12.6 - 12.9 mpg I have filled the tank up to 24 gallons that was a compleat top off to the neck gas cap. Changed drivers side ball joint, steering damper, control link bar, rotors and pads, steering gear box and power steering pump and hoses, tightened up steering a little, I have 235/75 R15s all way around,200 amp altinator, 1000 cca battery with 1000 reserve, fog/driving lights, new radiator, hoses, motor mount, leather power seats, new door panels, put new jeep arm rest in with back cup holders, changed rear view mirror with one out of a dodge strata, that has map lights and auto darkening feature, added a 280 watt stereo amp, took it to a jeep dealer to find the A/C drain, they said its the cleanest engine compartment they ever soon other than a new one, had a mechanic drive it around to find the squealing in brakes and why, he said that it drove like a Honda, very quick and very responsive, not sure if that's a good thing or not lol. But I get 12.6 - 12.8 Mpg.
