and here I thought you had to use a certan type of gear oil in the ax-15 do to its soft metal bearings

Yes - sort of. It's not bearings but rather the sychronizer hubs and rings.

API GL-5 is corrosive to brass. The AX-15 is full of it. GL-3/4-compatible fluid needs to be used.

Redline MT-90 (which is now stocked at all of the NAPAs in my town - yipeee!), Pennzoil Synchromesh, AC Delco Synchronized Transmission Fluid, etc are sane choices that won't kill our "obsolete" transmissions.
