OP, gear oil is what goes in the differentials of your solid axle equipped vehicle. Grab a Haynes or Chilton manual and check out differential service along with oil weights and capacity.

No neither of those you use it in the front and rear differentials for your "Gear Lube" in the 4x4 or just the rear in a 2wd.
Gear lube is for Gears (axles)
Transmission fluid is for transmissions
Transmission fluid (ATF+4) is for Transfer Cases
If you're draining your transfer case, be sure to get the silicone specifically for ATF or you'll be doing it again....

Even better, get a factory service manual specific to your vehicle. I originally bought a Haynes manual, and it is worse than worthless because it refers to things my Jeep doesn't have and procedures that don't apply. FSMs are expensive but absolutely positively worth it.

Let me simplify it for you: You're going about this backward. You don't start with a lubricant and say, "How do I use this?" You start with the machine or part you're working on and go get the proper lubricant for that job. Your question is kind of weird as a result, and that's why you're getting weird responses.
Maybe it would help if you told us why you're asking about gear oil. The way you asked the question almost makes it sound like you found a case of it that fell off a truck and said, "Hey, I wanna use this in my Jeep! I wonder how I'd do that!"
