Default How long do 4.0s really last?

I have 124k on the clock and I just checked the oil and it was low a hell. Refilled it, but it still got me thinking.....

How long do 4.0s really last?

I've seen some people with 260k plus on their 4.0s, then I see others with new engines at 146k. What's the deal? Is it different for each motor off the lot or is it a mixture of how you treat it and other factors like that?

Depends on how you use it and how you take care of it.

My current 4.0 has 241,000 on it.
I've seen them with over 300,000.

I have seen the older ones go for 250,000 plus but heard the 2000+ models with milti coil ignition like to grenade around 130,000 due to a weak block casting

x2 My 4.2 in my YJ has 260k and other than the carb being cold natured it runs like new. My stepfather bought it new in 87 and changed the oil every 5k and took real good care of it. My XJ on the other hand has 130k and gets treated like a rented mule and I don't see it making it that long, at least the jeep itself won't.

270k on my '99. My '89 had 235k when I sold it. I'd say its pretty common to see 200K+ mile Cherokees that are still running great. Im sure the ones that blew up early had minor to moderate defects in parts, or were neglected.

That makes me feel alot better. I have a 1999. It was more than likely beat to hell by the previous owner, (highschooler) but I intend on babying her from now on.

I had 220k on my 95 before i totaled it, 188k on my 97, and 240k on my 99. But as stated it all depends on how well taken care of they are.

My 87 had 320k on it, but it was a 4 banger so it doesn't count.

The Peep has never had internals touched, 531000+ km on the clock. Thats 330000 miles and counting. Runs 150 miles per day in all weather. The AW4 trans is also still kickin thru the gears in fine form. Oil and filters changed monthly.
