Default How to identify the rear end?

I have a 99 xj and am curious as to what rear I would have in it, I read that they started putting the chrysler 8.25 in the 97-01 models, I looked at the rear I have and there are no identifying marks or plates on it. How do I tell?

FYI the 8.25s started around 91 but it had 27 spline shafts, mid year 96 went to 29 spline.

These threads are getting annoying and more annoying. Take a picture and post it or let ppl know you found it so this can be closed and stop going to the top of the list whenever someone wants to chime in. I makes more important threads get pushed to the bottom

There's a difference in the diff housig that makes it a little more obvious than just the covers:

The Dana 35 is rounded:

The Chrysler 8.25 has a big flat lip sticking out:

This is not completely correct. ABS was only available with a D35. However both axles were sold without it. If you do not have ABS you could have either.

Also the 8.25 is a larger cover IIRC. Like it can swallow the turdy-5.

Yeah, OP has no use for that info unless he has both axles somewhere to compare, though

True about him not be able to compare sizes with it but in curious if we should also post dimensions, make this fool proof

Maybe you should start a movement.

The 8.25 will have a flat bottom.

Ah, too lazy for that. Besides, we all know there's gonna be a dozen more. Just like 2014 jeep threads.
