What's the difference between a 4.0 and a 4.0 high output?

LOL, no... the renix put out 177 in stock form, the HO made 190, both more than the V8's at the time. The HO has the chrysler computer system, updated cylinder head, manifolds and cam, all by chrysler. The renix was the old AMC design, with the renix computer, before chrysler started messing with it. They're both good motors. IMHO opinion the renix was more reliable though, even though an H.O. still can't be killed. And regardless of the numbers... my wife's 89 XJ got up every bit as much if not more than my 97. Just saying, the renix was not a "low output" motor

The Renix is the 'better' of the two, just a tad less power. However getting that extra power is very possible.
