Default Chrysler 8.25 questions

I have a 1999 XJ with a c-8.25 with 29 splines. I just got a few questions about it... Hopefully some of you can answer some of the questions, and others can look at the answers for their own research or whatever.

1) is the pumpkin housing made out of cast iron or cast steel?

2) if I wanted to buy a locker to install in my axle, all I have to get rid of the spider gears, right? Does the locker take over the role of spider gears, am I correct?

3) I know that in order to go to bigger gears, I would have to change out the carrier to accommodate the gears, but if I already installed a locker in there, would I have to get a "bigger" locker because the carrier is larger?

4) would a locker from 27 spline 8.25 axle work on a 29 spline axle?

5) is there anything special that I need to do when installing a locker?

6) have anyone ever welded on trusses on the 8.25?

7) what's the limitation on this axle regarding tire size? (Like how people say you shouldn't go over 33" on a dana 35.)

If anyone else have questions about 8.25, u can post it here and hopefully someone knowledgable can post an answer.

Thanks for reading and/or leaving an answer..

Steel
2) if I wanted to buy a locker to install in my axle, all I have to get rid of the spider gears, right? Does the locker take over the role of spider gears, am I correct?
Correct. A LunchBox locker will replace the side and spider gears.
3) I know that in order to go to bigger gears, I would have to change out the carrier to accommodate the gears, but if I already installed a locker in there, would I have to get a "bigger" locker because the carrier is larger?
No you do not need a new carrier for an 8.25" axle. The carrier is good up to 4.88.
4) would a locker from 27 spline 8.25 axle work on a 29 spline axle?
No it will not.
5) is there anything special that I need to do when installing a locker?
Read the instructions for your new locker multiple times and stop if there's any problems at all. Never force a center pin. If it doesn't slide in with minimal resistance then something is wrong.

6) have anyone ever welded on trusses on the 8.25?
Yes, many times.
7) what's the limitation on this axle regarding tire size? (Like how people say you shouldn't go over 33" on a dana 35.)
There many, many people running 35" tires. Add a set of Alloy Shafs if you want a bit more confidence in the axles strength.

Why did a lot of people say that carriers that had 3.55 gears are good up to 3.73 and any larger, the carriers needed to be swapped out?

They were talking about the Dana 30.

The Dana44 carrier break is 3.73 and up.

Chrysler 8.25" is 3.55 and up

So I can imagine those with 3.07 gears wanting to go up to 4.10, they would have to get new carriers for the 8.25 right?
