Got in a heated discussion with a buddy of mine after a couple of beers and we decided to turn to you guys for the answer.

I've got a 94 with a 8.25" chrysler rear. For my year its a 27spline. Correct? And if I wanna up my spline count I need to get 30 spline axle shafts and a 30 spline locker. Right?

97.5+ came with the 29spline 8.25. Iirc some of the housings may be different between the two styles where the 27spline is a POS pretty much. Someone will chime in if its even worth the swap

My understanding is that the 29 spline rears started in the later 96's?

I've found 97s with the 27 spline. Hmm. One thing I did notice was that the 27 spline has an extra "collar" by the axle pinion that the 29 spline doesn't have.

Do you think that "collar" could be a good quick reference to spline count without opening the diff?

My personal experience of (6) 27 spline 8.25, had the collar. Take a pic of yours. Does it have it.

As soon as I get done playing catch up around home plus get the wife's Blazer ready for winter I'll be doing the rear disc conversion on my '96. We'll know,at least in my case,if mine has the 29 spline rear. The build sheet shows an ISD of 08/26/1996.

Unfortunately I can't get the photo right now. It's at my mechanic getting an engine and tranny rebuild.
