Cherokee Seats - Do they suck?
I have only driven one XJ around the block as a test drive, and I don't recall how my comfort level was. But do you guys see a lot of issues with the seats? I'm speaking especially to those who still have stock seats and use their XJ as a daily driver. I've searched the forum and found a few links for new seats that will mount on easily, but what about that rear bench? The thing just looks miserable for any passenger above the age of 5. I'm really surprised nobody makes a full rear bench with head rests or a folding center arm rest like in most small SUVs. Any way to mount two front seats as back row bucket seats?

The rear seat is truly like a bench, but I find that my leather rear seat makes a great place to lay down if I'm feeling tired on a trip, and I would never replace it with a bucket seat of any kind. I really like my front seats.
Front seats are pretty comfortable to me. I'm too damn big to even try getting in the back so I can't tell you how that is. ZJ/WJ rear seats will swap into the rear with some work.

I always found cherokee seats to be comfortable. Front ones anyway. My daughter thought it should have a fold down arm rest/cup holder. There's gotta be a rear seat like that from another vehicle that would fit with a little modification.

My longest stint in them so far is only about three hours, but they were comfortable enough. Comfort isn't my issue. I wish either the steering wheel tilted up, a smaller diameter or flat bottomed, or the seat had vertical adjustment so that getting in and out was less awkward. I don't care about the comfort of the backseat since I'll never ride back there.

Both my son and I have XJ's and the biggest issue we have had with our front sets are the mounting brackets. They are flimsy and both of ours felt like we would fall out they lend so much. I took mine out and welded some plates to them to fix and strengthen them. then leveled them up with washers/spacers. now the seats feel great!

I find the front seats to be comfortable, the back seat not as much. The one thing about the back seat is the ability to fold it completely flat to give you more cargo room and if you are short enough, like myself at 5'8", a place to sleep. Changing out the rear seat would kill that functionality and limit the available space to just what is there with the seat up.

Front seats are great, most I've sat in it would be about 18 hours. I am 6'1". My previous ride was a Tercel, mind you, after driving my pickup for so long I'm sure I won't be as comfortable lol.
Back seats definitely suck. There is no leg room, the bench is a spongey mess and you sink to the floor, and the back is very low. Some folks have managed to install a rear bench from a Grand Cherokee which is a massive improvement. They've mounted them back a little bit, too, so this takes care of the original problems.

I found that it's great if I look at it as a lazyboy couch. It doesn't have too much in the lower back support department, but it has so much cushion. I installed infant seat at the back, the base sink a hell lot more than any of my other cars and its still wobby.
My lower back would hurt after 3-4 hrs sitting on the front seat. That said, for anything less than 3 hrs drive, I found it comfy, as in sofa type of comfy.
