went to see this one today:

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv...220736219.html

it was ok, but price was firm at 3850 and no way worth that - body/interior needed a lot of TLC. shame.

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv...228868308.html

next on the list...

I paid $2,000 for my 98 xj sport with 137,000 miles from the original owner, came with all service records. Later I replaced the exhaust from the cat back, heater core and hoses, radiator, hoses, water pump, thermostat, belt, front brake calipers, pads, rotors, hoses, lift it, wheels and tires, halogen headlamps and upgraded bulbs, driver side window regulator, track bar, battery. Buying an old xj you will probably have a similar experienc. Make sure the body has no rust, hasn't been in a major accident and the drivetrain is healthy. Spend as little as posible for the vehicle so you can fix it and make it what you want it to be with the money saved. I still have less than $5,000 into my jeep. Parts are plentyful and inexpensive but paying labor fees to fix things will be expensive and keep in mind that cherokees are gas guzzlers. Good luck and let us see what you end up buying.

would you never consider a 2000 then, with say 114K on clock? is there anything you can do to prevent head cracking, or is it a given that in 2000/01 it will be an issue?

It may or may not happen. People make the whole issue seem much worse than it is in my honest opinion. It really becomes an issue if you sverely overheat the engine or neglect to properly care for your cooling system. There have been surveys done that show that MOST do not crack, and MOST that do, do it under 100K. However, it is still a significant amount of them that have the issue.

Just some food for thought.

Let me put it this way. I love my 2000, and it has not had this issue, BUT if I were shopping for a different XJ I would probably try to look for a <99.

I agree with everyone else here. That is waaaaaay too much for an XJ. I would buy stock too, that way you know it hasn't been wheeled. I bought my 2000 Sport with only 83K miles on it for 4 grand and think that was a tad higher than what I wanted to spend. YOu can find them all day for 3-4 grand......I will say that cherokee's are almost a cult like vehicle now so if you see one that you really like...move on it!!!! It probably won't be for sale long!

I paid 5K for my 99 Limited with only 81,029 miles on it from the original owners in immaculate condition, you can find a better deal if they won't negociate....7900 is to much.

i agree now, after some education on here, so thank you all for that. the original XJ i posted on originially did end up selling for 7K which does seem like a lot. it also seems Cali is very expensive compared to other states for cars. i guess people price at what people are prepared to pay and there is a premium on under 100K XJ's out here. this one:

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst...236714163.html

has an offer in at 7.5K apparently..

on the "cracking" issue... if you had maintained correctly and did not really overheat, is it still an issue. and if it does become one, what's the outcome? new engine needed time?

Stock is a factory condition jeep, in terms of equipment, tires, shocks, etc. Wheeled is going out and driving it offroad, hard.
