I have a 97 Country. It has Power everything, electronic compass/temp/mileage, and came factory with CD. Can you imagine what people were saying about it when it came out? Go back a year and you're on a different planet. Go back 10 and jeez. I'm not really defending the crap they're coming out with now, because I don't know how they're built, but we can't mistake progress in automotive technology for gimpiness. Personally, I'm just happy to see my beloved brand actually praised for its 4x4-ness and quality again.

The reality is that a very small percentage of Jeep owners are enthusiasts who build them up and use them off road to any extent. For every one built Jeep on the road, there are hundreds of Jeep grocery getters, DDs, and family SUVs. Unfortunately, if Jeep hadn't evolved as a brand, they may very well be out of business today. As much as we love our XJs, the fact is that Jeep has a lot of competition in the daily driver SUV segment and they must do what is necessary to stay afloat.

Some of them may look 'gay' but I am willing to bet a new 4x4 Jeep out of the box will still own a trail better than their competition. At least we are fortunate enough to have owned one of the greater ones . . .

i agree that the older cherokee and jeep styling in general was ahead of it's time and one could argue even "timeless." my ZJ is a 95 and looking at it you'd think it was a lot newer styling wise.

but the 2011 cherokee is a sharp looking truck IMO.

At the Denver Auto Show today, they had Jeep rides on simulated terrain. The Unlimited Rubicon JKs did awesome, and the electronic swaybar disconnect is an awesome feature.
The 2011 WK Grand Cherokee...not so much. Saw one almost roll, and the independent suspension is terrible.

In the video above. Hey wouldn't you know it, A woman is driving the new Grand Cherokees and the wranglers.
I knew it all women Jeeps now. They moved to the girl "G"eeps from the Dodge caravans.

i would love to have a new grand cherokee for a family vehicle. i think we're comparing apples and oranges here. although quite capable, the new era grand cherokees are not made for crawling rocks. they are made for maximum ride comfort, combined with "above average" ability to make it through slippery road conditions using stock tires.
it's not an easy task to design a vehicle that will meet standards to be used by the government, keep a woman happy, take the kids to the ball game, haul the boat to the beach and run through Moab.
before passing a judgment, think about this...
say jeep makes a very capable offroader out of the grand cherokee, commander, liberty, and whatever else they're making these days... the street ride quality suffers, 70% of the market rejects it, company can't keep in business, they discontinue even the wrangler, and then the only other vehicle out there with solid axle front is 1 ton diesel pickups.
