2001 xj turbo
I would look at your heads casting numbers first. If its the 0331 stamped on Driver's Side at top, middle at valve cover edge,I would pass on a turbo tell you swap heads first. The 0331 head is the one known for cracking on the 00-01.If you have the good head http://www.boostwerksengineering.com...old-_p_17.html has a turbo manifold the rest will be up to you to fab up.The other option is a supercharger http://jeepm62superchargerkit.blogspot.com/ http://www.jeepsuperchargers.com/TJ_...ercharger.html

Each has their downsides a turbo kills exhaust tone and takes more parts to install.A blower will whine at higher rpms that can get annoying and changing the gear oil in a blower every 20k,If you never done it the burnt gear oil stinks bad.

I would say just from a practical power standpoint a supercharger is a better option on an XJ (unless you're making a dragster out of it). I'm imagining turbo lag and surge wouldn't be helpful in most off road situations.
Unless your using a very small turbo, you won't be fully spooled up until 3000 rpms or higher. That would lead to a lot of late surge in power that doesn't seem to fit the practical low end grunt of a 4.0 liter.

Installing a turbo/supercharger is one thing but you will need to be able to tune for it. I’d first look into engine management or who can reflash yourcomputer to deal with boost.

Forced induction in general adds heat, not just turbos.
I considered a turbo when I first got my XJ. In the end I decided it was just not worth it. You are much better off with a stroker motor or engine swap in general.

I am partial to superchargers.
Our SC 4.0s actually run cooler that most rigs here on CF. Always under 210*.
SC better than stroker and way less than a engine swap.

I dont want to hijack a thread but i have a question for you cobramarty. I know your kits run relatively low boost and obviously an engine in good health is recommended. Im sure mine could use a rebuild but its never really been abused and cranks higher rpms no problems. what are my chances of ruining it with a sc? higher mileage engine but i dont know the exact number. 99 xj
Mine have 160-200,000 miles. 6 pounds on one and 10-11 pounds on the other.
I make sure the engines are as good as they can be. All good basic maintaince.
Clean the radiator and block with coolant cleaner/flush and new antifreeze and water wetter. Make sure water pump is good.
Run 1/2 bottle Seafoam thru the intake and the other half in the gas tank. Followed by a bottle of Chevron Tectron and then 8oz of MMO. Run 2 cups water thru the intake.
1/2 bottle of seafoam in the oil then change to Rotella T6 and add can Restore.
New spark plugs.
New O2 sensors from Rockauto.
Cange and flush the auto trans fluid.
These engines are very robust. Low rpm.
Must have boost timing retard and extra fueling or it will blow.
