Default Simple low fab bumper build

Going to be doing a bumper over the next few days, hopefully not weeks. I don't want a big exotic tube bumper and I don't want to run 2 winches so I'm gonna put a reciever in it.

My starting mock up looked like this

Basically the build would be 6" flat stock that's 3/16 thick and 2x2 tube on the ends to protect the fenders. So the front piece would be 6" tall and the bottom prerunner type piece is also 6" tall. Obviously the 3 things hanging off the front are 2 d-rings and a reciever.

After looking at it further I may decide to go only 4" tall in the front and instead of one prerunner piece I may go with two 4" pieces to round it out a bit better, and should have better clearence. I wanna keep this simple but functional. I bought 20' of both 4" and 6" flat stock today and will be starting the cuts tmrw.

Any input or suggestions are apprieciated. More pics to come.

I get all my steel from Pattons off of I ave (link below). I bought all of the steel for under 100 but I bought too much because I like having extra around. If you don't include the cost of the hitch and d rings, I will probably have only about $50 worth of steel into this bumper. If you need any help just PM me. I'm always down to help a fellow xj'er.

This is mine. Almost what you are going to do, but without the receiver. I bought it from a guy that made it for his Ford Bronco II. For 20$ I can't complain.

If your just using steel plate what r you going to use to support the bckside of the reciver. Thats why Iwas thinking about using 2x6 rectangular tubeing.

Know thats a steal, I thought my two inch lift from pick-a-part for $13.81 was good 20 bucks for the bumper I think you got me beat, and it looks good to.

I will probably tie it into the bottom prerunner piece and top piece with some gussets, along with gussets on the sides. I didn't wanna use tubing for three reasons. First is that its more expensive, second its a lot heavier and I'm already starting to add a lot of weight in homemade frame stiffeners, and third reason is because I'm trying to make it a low profile bumper so it doesn't hurt my approach angle.

Here is a side shot of where I should be able to get it close enough, and I'm thinking maybe a little closer once everything starts coming together...

since you are not using tube.

Make sure you add LOTS of bracing and gussets!!!! and LOTS of bracing where the hitch is going to be.

Btw look in your "scrap" pile at the steel yard. I scored an 80" piece of 3/8" 3x6 tube for $37.XX

most steel yards weigh scrap by the pound. here it is $0.30 a lb

great looking design tho!

make sure your mounts are atleast 5 bolts if not more into the "frame"

and if you are using flat steel dont put your shackles where you did you will fold your bumper in half.... make them out of your unibody frame mounts, make them one piece that way when you pull the shackle you are pulling on the frame as a whole unit, not just on 3/16" sheet metal....
