So I have wanted to install Rear Captains Chairs For a while but couldn't find a Write-up on it, So I thought I would try to do it y self and was quite successful.

Parts List

2 Captains Chairs $25 each out of a junkyard
(mine are out of a 2002 Chevy Cavalier)
1 10 foot 2x2 $5
4 5 inch 3/8 in Mushroom head Carriage bolts $4
4 3/8 wingnuts $2
6 2 inch 1/2 bolts $5
2 3 inch L brackets $4

Total $70

Cut the 2x2 to the following length for cavalier seats

2 16inch cuts
2 10inch cuts

Drill holes 12 inches apart centered in 16 inch pieces

Drill holes 8 inches apart centered in 10 inch pieces

Drill holes 8 inches aparts in 16inch piece as well to connect the two pieces


push carriage bolts though the 8 inch apart holes to connect the two pieces

Next Step Connect Brackets to bottom of chair, and install front

so after removing your rear bench completely slightly lift up carpet there should be two opening in which your bolts from the bracket will slide into (CHECK YOUR MEASUREMENTS DONT USE MINE THINGS CAN BE DIFFERENT) Attach wing nuts to bottom of bolts and you should be set for the front.

I like the idea, but how well do you think these would hold up in an accident?

Finally Create an L bracket to secure the rear of the seat, I havent completed this step, but i will post some pictures when i have completed this step, but the idea is to secure it to the point in the picture below.

Finally take your middle belt and run it through the bottom of the seats and fasten it and tighten it, Yes i know this is not the most secure but it is better than nothing till I figure a better solution. Open for suggestions

I am fairly certain that the bracket will hold up in an accident they are really sturdy, but i imagine there is something better and more sturdy, i just have limited resources.

looks cool. now you just gotta build a small center console with some cup holders in it.

if your were at all concerened about the wood brackets, now that you have made a template, you could have someone make them out of steel for you

Im not to worried about them, but i might do that when i get some extra cash

in all honosty, if you have done as much hacking on a xj as i have, you would see that the wood is probably the strongest part of your jeep now

Damn you beat me to it! But really that looks good, I've wanted to do that, just haven't had the motivation, and haven't decided if I willing to give up the ability to fold my seats down yet.

had the same thought of not being able to fold my seats down, thats why i used wing nuts it only takes 5 min to pull the seats out, and another 5 to bolt in the bench, granted you have to plan ahead, but 10 min isn't awful
