Flux is okay, and like you said, with proper prep work, it can work pretty well. Nice thing about solid core is that all you have to do to prep the metal is clean the oil off. And you're right, a $1500 welder isn't needed for a good weld job. Patience, skill, and a good eye can do wonders. In all honesty though, no professional welder (my dad being one) is worth their weight if they're using flux core. They all use solid core.

I agree, every type of welding has its place. I prefer solid core. I've never heard that flux is stronger though. I will say that solid is easier, but I'll definitely look into flux being stronger.
And thanks for the props!

Alright, final steps in this bumper build have finally happened! Took forever, but it's done!
First, I cut down the fairlead mount. I never liked how high it sat, so it met the grinder, the welder, and some new paint.
Here's how the bumper looked before:

And the chopped fairlead mount
Before:

After:

Welding

and paint

And here's how it sat once that was done:

Next came some DOM tube bending

Some grinding

some welding

And voila! A Bull bar!

And that's it. Some lights will be added later, but that's it. The bumper is FINALLY completely done!

As for how it looks, this was my first bumper build. Patience, lots of cardboard templates, and having an experienced welder help and teach you are invaluable. Take your time and yours will turn out exactly how you want it. The only limit is your creativity.
Thank for the props!
