I'm wondering how much weight/strain 4-6 of those would take?

I don't have a factory rack so I'm thinking that I could build one using something like that. Built with a vice & hammer to secure a rack that has support for distributing the weight just sitting on the roof...

I think I would take it a step further by coating anything that contacts the truck with some kind of plastic or rubber...

I don't post links much so I hope I did it right. I made my own rack and had the same dilemma. I couldn't build these for less than $40 if you include my time. I am a fabricator of sorts professionally and It would take all afternoon to come up with as nice of a finished product as this. Anyway I've used the rack for about two years and they have held up great.
