I am going to face a similar storage problem when my jeep is set up. I want to be able to go on two or three day fishing trips. That means plenty of food, water, and fishing gear in addition to any recovery gear I keep in the back. I also don't want to keep the spare outside. The problem is compounded when two or more people ride along with their gear and I add the kayaks. Sooooo....
My parents suggested that I get a pop up camper like they own. I like to be a little different so I am piecing together a matching trailer. I can get a MJ bed for around 200 from the junk yard. Paint it to match the XJ, add a small lift, matching tires, camper shell, and a hitch that can hold up to the flex from going off road and you have the perfect storage container. Add a locking toolbox just in front of the bed and you can lock up the big tools you might need but don't want to carry.
I've seen other off road trailers but none that match the vehicle towing it.
