Default what year(s) of transmission can be used in a 1998 grand cherokee 4.0L?

my friend has a 1998 grand cherokee and hes pretty sure his tranny is slipping, he was told only a tranny out of another 1998 grand cherokee can be used. we are just wondering if this is true or if there are other options.

also before he replaces the tranny hes gonna try a tranny flush with a new filter and some Lucas trans-medic, when he got the filter he was told its recomended to adjust the bands. is that a hard process or is it something a person with some mechanical knowledge can do?

42RE four speed automatic transmission was used in 1993.3 to 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokees with 4.0L engines.

I called my friend who works the counter at a JY/used Auto Parts place, to have him check the interchangeability. For all 3 engines, 4.0L, 5.2L, and 5.9L, the '98 trans is a one year only item. While earlier years from each engines might physically bolt up, the electronics, and computers, are unique to '98.

I got this from alldata

also alldata doesnt state that its a one year item. that being said alldata sucks sometimes. best bet is to call the parts dept or service dept at a jeep dealer

I can't help what alldata states. I believe the interchange manual, and an honest business man. If it would work, it would be listed in there. They lose sales by not having a '98 trans when it's needed. He told me he had the earlier model trans, but not one for a '98.
I've known this guy, and used this place for over 20 years. So before you spend your money, call around and see what you can find out for yourself before spending money on something that his book states will only work properly "electrically and computer wise" on a '98.
